Racoon was not an option as there is already a company in France using that callsign. The company tried to apply for Porter Dash and it was approved by ICAO but was refused by NavCanada. We were told there was a bunch of options they submitted for approval but were either rejected or not available.

Alas we got stuck with Dash Port… 🤦‍♂️

As for why the 2 operating certificates it comes from the upfront capital that was required to add the new type to original certificate. It was much less required by starting with a new certificate. It permitted them to get started sooner this way as well from my understanding.
For about a nanosecond Air Canada Regional (Jazz) tried ‘TRANSCAN’. Most often called ‘TRASHcan’ by ATC. It got changed.

Picking a call sign is not rocket science. But shocking how often it can get screwed up. You do have to assume it will be misheard or misspoken.

Keep it simple…… :-)
I hear “Maple” may be free now… ;)

Maple was a good one.

When I was at jazz and flying around in the US, on occasion, a controller would toss in a “maple”. It was a good feeling

Maple was a good one.

I want any of the following - and if Maple was one of them - so be it:

Bandit
Trash Bandit
Trash Panda
Klepto Bear
Masquerade
Empress
or Canadian....

Personally though, I want nothing to do with AC, and while absorbing aspects of AC help to decrease the startup costs of our operation, I would imagine the board would orefer to remain distanced, unless AC sent out a stupidly good offer to absorb us.

I want any of the following - and if Maple was one of them - so be it:

Bandit
Trash Bandit
Trash Panda
Klepto Bear
Masquerade
Empress
or Canadian....

Personally though, I want nothing to do with AC, and while absorbing aspects of AC help to decrease the startup costs of our operation, I would imagine the board would orefer to remain distanced, unless AC sent out a stupidly good offer to absorb us.
I do agree that “maple” too closely promotes the “fly the flag” motto.

Raccoon would have been perfect for the dash. But RTO in France owns that call sign. They should have held a contest for best call sign instead of throwing in a few of their own.

The savings derived from TPPC, the ability to IMMEDIATELY populate ACP/LTC rosters, and the value of experience on type in a new and rapidly expanding E-jet operation is almost unmeasurable. It is a lottery winning on top of a lottery winning.

This was well handled by Porter. It was mishandled by the red team. It was a perfect storm.

And the storm hasn’t ended yet.

Couldn't agree more.

Between that and Westjet retreating west, Porter is filling a void in this perfect storm while continuing to grow at an extreme rate. From what I can tell, Porter is eclipsing growth at both Air Canada and Westjet combined. I don't think either carrier is accepting and staffing for 2 brand new tails per month.

With the new US certificate, US destinations are going to be dropping nearly every month until the forecasted route plan is complete, likely late 2024.

This will also include Carribean and Mexican destinations.

Too bad “JetPort” was already taken…. Could have allowed the OG Q400 operation to retain the “Porter” call sign.
