Re: Air Sprint Questions
Hello,
I am wondering what the average amount of nights at base is in any given month at Air Sprint?
I know that reserve is basically 18 days a month on the 18/12 schedule. However, are you getting called everyday? And is every call out for an overnight? Or is it common to get called for single day pairings?
Thanks in advance

Just a quick correction before I answer your questions, our PBS schedules (equity bid system) work on a 28 day cycle, the standard schedule is 16/12, with 18/10 and 14/14 as potential options depending on availability.
The best way to answer your questions is to say that it varies depending on a number of factors such as base and schedule. Some rotations you may spend the entire rotation away from home/base, others you may have a day or two or more without any assigned duties. Day trips do happen, but I wouldn't say it is common, for example on todays schedule there are two day trips planned out of 25 actively flying aircraft.
For pilots at our main bases (YYC, YYZ, YUL) overnights at home are more common during their rotation as we have a fair amount of movements through those bases as well as YYC and YYZ being our primary maintenance bases. For pilots considering one of our sub bases we normally tell them to expect to be away from home for their entire rotation as we tend to have less movements from those bases, which means less opportunities for overnights. The advantage we can offer for pilots at these locations is essentially paid commuting, as AirSprint covers the cost of airlines and hotels to get you from your chosen base to where an aircraft is, and this positioning occurs on a work day compared with other operations where you may need to commute on an off day and/or at your own expense.
I hope that answers your questions and feel free to reach out directly if you would like additional details!

Re: Air Sprint Questions
Hey Matt,
Thank you for the quick reply.
I have a question regarding the types of candidates that would be interested in a career at Air Sprint. It seems as though you will be away from home more than you will at any airline in Canada, while the compensation remains lower.
Why would somebody choose to do that?
This is a genuine question and I don’t mean any disrespect, just wondering if maybe there are other reasons somebody would choose to build a career at Air Sprint.
Because with the hiring requirements that AirSprint has, somebody could go to Air Canada, WestJet, CargoJet, Porter, etc and have a better QoL and compensation.
Like I say, I don’t mean any disrespect. And I really appreciate that management at AirSprint is so transparent on AvCanada.
Thanks

It's impossible for me to compare us to every single operation out there as QoL can vary drastically even within a company itself due to seniority, position and other factors so I'll keep this fairly generic. QoL can be quite subjective and what is important to you may not be important to others. For example, with our schedule you tend to get longer stretches of time off compared to the other operators you mention as some don't like the 1 or 2 days off then back to work. It can be beneficial to have 5, 6 or 7 consecutive days off on a regular basis depending on your personal preferences. While I don't have exact data as we don't track it, I have looked over Porter (E2) and AC (NB) schedules and the overnights are similar between them and what I see on our schedule (but we get to keep the hotel points

As for pay, we were the first after Covid to introduce a new pay scale making our First Officers one of the highest paid FO's in Canada. Since then most operators have caught up on our year one, but consider for a moment that coming into AirSprint with 2000-2500 hours you could potentially be a Captain within 1 - 2 years, which for the most part isn't possible at the companies listed above. So, for someone in that position, you could be going from $80k or $82k to $135k in less then 2 years. As far as I know that isn't happening, or at least doesn't consistently and reliably happen at those operators mentioned.
A few last points, we're still a relatively small company compared to those mentioned above, and we take pride in the fact that you don't feel like just a number working here. Each pilot knows who their direct supervisor is and can give them a call or stop in for a chat whenever they like, and this is true of every manager right up to and including our CEO James Elian. If you are someone who likes variety, last year we flew to more unique destinations then Air Canada, WestJet and Porter combined. Times 3. The last point I'll make is job security, as due to how the contracts with our owners are structured, you would be hard pressed to find a more secure job in aviation.
Have a good weekend!

Thank you for the quick reply, you make excellent points.
I have two more questions that I can think of right now:
1. Is it possible to pick which days off you want per month. For example, can I say like give me every weekend off and then every Wednesday off, which would be 12 days off per month and would mean that I would never have to be gone very long?
Or is it more like, you do as many reserve days in a consecutive order as allowed by CARs, then your days off after that?
2. What is the timeline for hiring out of YVR again?
Thanks

You do have the option to bid for specific days off in a month on the PBS schedule, however there are rules associated with the PBS that would require a minimum of 6 consecutive days available to work followed by a minimum of 4 days off (3 is possible if you sign a waiver allowing the system to do so) so having every weekend off and every Wednesday off would not be possible. There are pilots that prefer the shorter runs and bid fairly successfully for runs of 6 or 7 days on a regular basis.
We are accepting resumes for all bases at the moment, on the Careers section of the AirSprint website (https://www.airsprint.com/careers/) you'll find our Pilot Career Guide which may help answer more of your questions as well as a link to the application portal.
Kind Regards,

I assume this is the for the first "pre" interview discussion with out recruiter Steffany? If so, this is more of a meet and great, an opportunity to tell us a bit about yourself, your flying experience, why you are interested in joining our team and what you know about AirSprint. The best advice is to just be yourself, and if you have any questions you'll have an opportunity to ask those as well.
Good luck!

Hi Matt,
Do you answer every application whether it's positive or negative? if so, what would be your current timeframe for application treatment?
Many thanks.

For any applicants that we interview we certainly provide follow up either way. Similarly, for applicants that do not meet our hiring requirements and we know we will not be moving forward with at this time we also reach out and provide feedback. The area we are looking to improve in is those pilots that meet our requirements but have not yet been selected for an interview. We are working towards a process that provides those pilots with timely updates to their application status, which is something we are not currently doing.
Hope that answers your question!
Kind Regards,

Curious if you are still hiring for FO’s out of Calgary? I applied in January and followed up a couple times since but didn’t hear anything. If you’re not hiring anymore, do you know when you may be hiring again for Calgary base?
Thank you!

In regards to the posting for Eastern based Embraer Captain’s, what are the bases currently being offered? Anything in the Maritimes? Feel free to DM if preferred.

Hi Corpdvr,
We are currently looking to fill spots predominately in YYZ and YUL however we would consider placements in YQB and YHZ as well. Best bet would be to apply through out portal or shoot me your resume directly and we would be able to follow up with a more specific answer to your case.
Cheers!
Matt
