I heard a rumor that the 1st and 2nd groundschool are only dash? Can anyone confirm?
It's impossible to confirm this as they can change their requirements. When I was in g/s, the vacancies were almost all YYZ RJ. Lots of rumblings on avcanada and from others at Jazz for me to expect a YYZ base. When we saw the breakdown there wasn't one single YYZ base.

I dont know what the last class was, but I did hear there were no YYZ spots. There's 9 openings in YYZ though, so they will be popping up in courses to come.

Hey all,

Couple of newbie questions....does Jazz have ready/airport reserve? Or is it just the 2 hour call out? Tried searching but couldn't find the answer. Also, how long is it taking these days to hold a line? Though I know that could change overnight I'm just looking for a general kind of idea...

Thanks!

No airport reserve.
Holding a block could be from day one or may take months. It depends on your base and your seniority number drawn.

Based on our bid, the openings were as follows:
RJ spots: 9 YYC, 6 YYZ
Dash spots: 1 YHZ, 3 YYZ, 18 YYC, 8 YVR, and 12 YUL.

[/quote]

Like C-HIRS mantioned, those were the spots for the last bid. How long to a block holder would be on which position you would bid for.

YYC DH8 will get you out of reserve the quickest (1 or 2 months even if that.)
YUL DH8 would be next ( a few months)
Then I would say YYC RJ followed by YVR DH8 (a good part of a year)
Then YYZ DH8 (a year at least would be my guess if not more)
YYZ CRJ (long time, a year + probably)
YHZ DH8 would take the longest, (you better like reserve if you want the YHZ spot)

Again things could change. sometimes senior pilots like to bid reserve (to work less) which would allow the junior pilot to hold a block.

Again these are my guesses only. Treat it with a grain of salt.

Having said all that, reserve is not too bad (unless you commute). You are not on call 24/7. 14 hrs period on call.

Due to senior folks bidding reserve, I held a block from day one in YYZ on the dash. But when the shuffle happened last fall I lost a few below me and could only hold reserve  . I got a block in February, but it was terrible...I think I did 9 continuous duties. So if I was living in YYZ I'd have no problem taking reserve as opposed to a very crappy block. However, I commute, so I'd give my left nut to hold a block again. I thought for sure that I was going to get one for April, but for some reason we have 15 reserve lines instead of 10 like the bid package said.

As someone already mentioned, it depends on what base you get, and what time of year it is. There are usually more senior folks bidding reserve in the summer.

Enjoy Jazz!

Hey Jazzbeat let me help you out. :D

coffee addict wrote:Anyone know what positions/bases were given in the March 23rd groundschool?
From what I heard. It was all Dash. Half went to YYC and the rest was a split between YVR and YUL. Not sure of the exact numbers.

I think there will be 1 more GS in April, and 2 in May.

For those that got on, Welcome aboard !!!

Where did you hear that? Any indication as to why it was cancelled?

Postponed perhaps?

If the second ground school is in fact cancelled then it should be obvious as to why: It will not be business as usual at AC. I think it is fair to say that cuts are coming and if there are cuts at AC, you can bet there will be cuts at Jazz too. This was demonstrated last summer when Jazz issued a reduction bid following announced reductions in flying at AC. There are a number of transborder routes that just don't have the loads they once had and those will either be scaled back or cut out altogether.

I think I'd be pretty worried about the possibility of cuts. The bright side is you'll always have the chance to come back when it picks up. What do you do in the meantime, hurts me to think..

I think Jazz has no clue with regard to what AC wants to do in the near future and the uncertainty is just killing everyone. Investors included.

Brize, I guess you are the half-empty glass type of guy judging by your post. Sheesssh, there's always some one waiting to rain on the parade.

LOL JazzJetDriver, you made me chuckle. No offence taken and perhaps my friend, perhaps you are right. BUT, sometimes you I have to call it what it is. It's not looking good. I absolutely love the job here. But I can't help but feel worried for some involved.

I'm just calling the glass half something... and not what it used to be a short time ago.

Second May GS is cx. Due tosome return to works (LOA's) and the fact that these pilots would have been online only in mid JUly and the flying slows down in Sept, the company has decided they'll make due with the new hires planned. Nothing to due with reductions and blah blah blah. Want to know about crew staffing levels? Talk to a CRC member (there are 4); they're very helpful.

Maybe the second May gs is cxxd but not the second gs, saw the new crews coming through the crew room today on their orientation. Next gs in early May as mentioned is the work from one of the instructors.

Hey, I'm in the May 4 groundschool.

Does anyone who has done the GS recently know when time is given for relocating to base?
We're supposed to bid the first week in orientation, do you get time to move right after that? or is it at the end of the GS?

Thanks

The end of orientation you will have about a week off, if you chose to move than. Other than that they'll usually give you about a week off at the end of training as well. Plus tonnes of time off in between.

cheers
