Might i humbly suggest that its the instructor's job to change how the student thinks about the process. I find there's not a lot of guidance on what it really entails to be a commercial and working pilot in this country, and I feel that's somewhat of a shame. That's psychology... If the flight test is not done, the student will keep thinking about it and preparing for its (mostly useless) exercises.
Consequently, the product that's being produced is less than useful in many cases. Also, I wouldn't discount all of those exercises as pointless, some of them are just basic flying skills, which if everyone in the system thinks that they're pointless, its no wonder lots of CPL holders these days can't do them. YVMV, but I feel its entirely useful for a CPL to be able to make a 45 degree banked turn and not lose control of the airplane, or make a reasonable stab at a forced landing, or get lost with map in hand within sight of the airport. You know, those unimportant things that never come up as a working pilot. They're all going straight into TAAs that are going to make all of that irrelevant, right?
