Whatever name you want to make up for it, there's no denying airborne particulate matter is bad for you (in bleed air or not). In an acute poisoning (worse than normal pollution in the bleed air) common sense says it could definitely cause sickness. For most people, low level long term exposure is all they get and is never noticed. It's just as bad as all airborne pollution in modern society, and every other chemical that builds up in you. Everyone knows cancer rates are skyrocketing and it's not hard to guess why, it might hit you sometime in life and who knows what ultimately caused it but everything adds up...

PS I too have seen the black stain on the inside of a metro cockpit window! Doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling..

Want to see scary? I replaced the heater core in a mid 90's VW diesel once. It was 30% plugged with black "slime". It's more like worldtoxic syndrome. Pollutants are everywhere.

sstaurus - I think you're bang on.

The problem is that when things build up in certain people and affects them earlier than normal they react by trying to identify a reason. And it's not to affect a cure or encourage more investigation and substantiation but to provide grounds for a lawsuit. Once you can create enough noise about one specific situation and single it out, give it a name and build some acceptance in the public, you have a much better chance of targeting some company(s) or agencies for compensation.

Because everyone knows that money fixes everything, right?

Airplanes have been around a long time and if this was a real risk you'd think that pilots, flight attendants and frequent fliers would have been affected in droves.

And although Wikipedia isn't the ultimate source of all truth, it is interesting to read their page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerotoxic_syndrome
