It's got my vote. I spent a few years there and it's a very nice town. Houses right in town aren't all that cheap but they are still a lot better than say Mississauga. Some real bargains can be found in the rural area to west of Milton. You'll probably get a large plot of land with the deal too. The 401 runs right by that area. Commute times to pearson are dependant on if it's rush hour or not. That town is a popular spot for airline guys raising families.Northern Skies wrote: What about somewhere like Milton? Any thoughts?
What is the cheapest area to live near YYZ?

Down town eh? I've heard that you really don't need a car down there. This would be a few less things to pay for; parking, insurance, gas.
I'm getting a little ahead of myself by even asking these questions, but I like to know what I'm getting myself into. If successful, I'm looking at damn near a 50% pay cut. Not a huge deal for the short term, but still will be a big lifestyle change, painful at first but better overall.
And of course I’ll be looking to reduce living expenses, so getting a 2 or 3 bedroom place and a few roomies would be a must. I hear there is a subway from downtown to Pearson? Or is it a shuttle bus? Is it convenient? How about grocery stores downtown?
My girlfriend would be staying in YYC, along with our house we bought
, but what can you do.
Anyway, thanks for the info.
Cheers.

There is no subway service from downtown to YYZ. There are two TTC buses that go to YYZ at all hours of the day and night. The city is considering building a direct rail service from Union Station (downtown) to YYZ because of all the business people.
Hamilton is far but cheaper than most of the other areas. Milton is great becuase you have 2 different highways that you can take to YYZ (401 and 407) plus Derry Rd. Peak time it's 50 minutes and 25 with zero traffic. A new and small townhouse can be bought for 225K. Also Milton has GO train service that takes you "close" to the airport.

I spent a year or so in Milton. It is growing, but it still maintains a nice 'small town' feel to it. Even in rush hour, the real jam doesn't start till you get past the 407 and into Mississauga area.
Acton, Halton Hills etc... good location, nice and cheap, but apparently not 'nice' towns.
It all depends what your plans are. If you'd eventually like to move the g/f to the province with you, I'd be picky.
If its just you, grab a basement apartment downtown and do the commute by public means.
Just my two cents

Just watch where you live in Cambridge, some of it is nice, but some of it is far worse than Downtown Hamilton too. Lived there for two years...that was enough.chewsta wrote:Guelph is nice but a little pricey. Cambridge is an extra 5-10 minutes but a fair bit cheaper.
....and currently living Downtown Hamilton, it's really not that bad. I can honestly say that I could walk downtown with $1,ooo.oo in my pocket and know I'll still have it when I get home.

Sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin no pain.

Do you have a glock in the other pocket?LostinRotation wrote: I can honestly say that I could walk downtown with $1,ooo.oo in my pocket and know I'll still have it when I get home.

I didn't figure downtown YHM as that deep in crime though. It always seemed pretty mellow down there.

They guy's looking for prices in and around the YYZ area. All you've posted were lame attempts at being sarcastic. He wasn't asking for monkey's personal views on the realty prices and Canada.AEROMONKEY wrote:wow i find it kind of funny that people actually think 285000 for a townhouse isn't bad! or 200,000 for a condo is a good deal! but hey they have squash.....gotta love southern ontario!!
I can understand your hate towards squash, with pretty little fingernails like yours, wouldn't wanna break them either.
Now go spank yourself.
p.s. I never said 200K was a good deal... just telling the guy what the going prices are.
