Unfortunately it seems you were sold a lie. Even at the best of times, you could maybe expect some survey or pipeline patrol work in a 172. Most stay on to instruct. Unless you were in a college program that had a partnership with a regional airline there really isn't any way around the entry level positions. Hence the name...
Buttercup suck it up...RWB explained it well, sorry you missed the boat.

I like taking the rampies along when I can, they can't log the hours, but they get experience and extra hands on time to keep up their skills. They also network that gets them jobs, and moves them up the ladder. I am lucky enough to still be flying. I have probably called 5 past rampies/fo's with job leads in the last week. Now single pilot, I teach flight school to any that want to sit up front with me
