A combination of pilot-in-command time on floats, heavy tail wheel aircraft, single pilot time (IFR), and turbine time would all make an application at the Abbotsford company look good.
Generally, 2500 hours TT is an absolute minimum, as long as the applicant has plenty of multi-pic. Military pilots are generally a shoe-in. One important factor Conair assesses in an interview is crew compatibility while in the field.
My advice is, if you really want this career, then call the flight departments, speak to the Chief Pilots, ask what experience you need to get hired, get the experience, then phone back before annual hiring in February. Keep doing this and eventually you'll be flying air tankers.
It all depends on the supply, demand and where you prefer to be based. We have 415 co-pilots who have been sitting in the right seat for upwards of 16 years but we also had co-pilots who spent a couple of years in the right seat and are now Twin Otter Captains flying them on waterbomb floats. We have ex Twin Otter Captains who are now 415 Captains or King Air 350 Captains.
Some guys don't mind moving for an upgrade and other are happy where they are at because of lifestyle.
We will have about 80% turn over in the 415 Captain ranks in the next 5 to 6 years because of retirements. We will also lose a few co-pilots by then as well.
