Birddog, Mulroney is advising - so what. Trudeau advised too.
The Globe & Mail is an Eastern leader - specifically liberal Ontario. Not by chance, but because it was one of the first. It is in no way a national paper. Neither is the Edmonton Sun or Journal.

And until the Harper and the West breaks of with the rest of Canada, and starts a massive armament program - please refrain from any pathetic attempt to compare Harper to Hitler. To try to do so suggests that either complete ignorance of ideology or lack of knowledge regarding Hitler's cult of personality. Jesus.

That was not meant to be a comparison with Harper Parizeau and Hitler. The reason Hitler made the cut in my profile is that even he understood how easy it is for the general population to be like sheep.

Going through life with my head down? I don't know who you think you're talking to, but clearly I'm more informed about Nazi Germany than you are. You had better go back and read about the rise of fascism in Germany. What Hitler thought is debatable. What happened is history. However, I must admit I've never seen more "sheep" vote Liberal in my life.

I don't see how anyone could not see your attempted comparison, so please my dear BD, don't piss on my head and try to tell me it is raining...

Birddog are you OK! Some of your comments have me concerned. First this thread was started because of the interest rate hike the day after the election. Anyone following the financials the past year new that rate hikes were coming and they started before the election was even called. After the first hike, it was also reported that there were at least another 4 to come, so I don't follow you on how this has anything to do with the Conservatives forming the new government.

You don't think the Liberals had anything to do with the hike not being announced during the election campaign do you?

There was also a province wide conference call that got cancelled at the very last minute with all the Provincial MNR staff a couple of weeks ago. No reason has been giving for the cancelation. The call was to announce the new vision of the MNR which entails jobs cuts, office closures and consolidating of district boundries etc. I don't suppose the last minute cancelation of that call by the Provincial Liberals had anything to do with the fact the Federal Liberals were lagging in the polls especially since the speculation is, that most of the job cuts will take place in southern Ontario.

I believe it was time for change. If the Conservatives turn out to be as corrupt as the Liberals, they will only get 4 years of feeding at the trough and not 12 because we will kick their asses down the road at the next election.

Higher interest rates .. yippee ... now my investments will be spinning off some nice dividends and it will attract some foreign investment capital that would be going elsewhere in the world.

Ease up there Birddog! Why don't you allow the conservatives to screw up before you go ranting about how terrible they are!

The BoC has been raising interest rates since this summer, and they were talking about another rate hike even before Xmas for about this time. I admit I can't remember if I heard about it before or after the election announcement.

As for all these Mulroney references... how many of mulroney's tories were elected this election? I doubt there's more than a handful. The fact is, you can't compare this conservative government with the Mulroney era.

Cheers, and have a beer!

Birddog,

Suggesting interest rates went up as a result of the Conservatives getting elected is uninformed and inaccurate.

If someone started a thread accusing the BoC of being Liberal friendly and deliberately sabotaging the new government it would be just as bad as what you wrote - and just as wrong.

Sorry to hear you have such a hard time with, "Bible thumpin right wing bigots". I can't quite figure out if you're telling us being an intolerant censorship loving left wing bigot is okay or if you're confessing to having been diddled by a priest as a youngster and you're too cheap to get a therapist.

Maybe neither. Maybe you're just looking for an argument...

You know folks...when Brian Mulroney went on TV right after Harper won...I saw red...not Liberal Red but the kind of red that drives a bull insane. Some of the things he said that night of the 23rd opened old birddog wounds. The next morning when the hike was announced...it brought back memories when interest rates climbed to a whopping 19% back in his era, and a recession was well under way. All the while he and his wife Mila were jet setting around the world and a lot into the states.

Whether if the recession was a result of the previous government or not...I don't care...I just don't like that man. For very personal reasons.

I'll keep it short:

1991 saw a labour dispute in Canadian aviation which was the longest in history the industry saw. 16 months a group was locked out...NOT on strike ...LOCKED OUT by the employer from their jobs because they wanted basic working conditions. Not equal pay to pilots of AME's...just the basics by a responsible employer.
Anyway this group went to Parliament Hill to protest and picket for support from the government because the owner was literally getting away with illegal activities yet was allowed to continue to operate. Also on the picked line were protesters trying to bring attention to their homeland problems. Their cause pointed to Rwanda and the genocides there.

Later that morning the aviation group were led into the viewing area of Parliament, they had to go through security and who comes up the stairs...Mr. Mulroney...The honorable PM of Canada. A young attractive pretty blond woman from the group shouts out..."Brian...!” He B-lines for her...she states the following in hopes of bringing attention to their cause.

"We're here because we've been locked out of our jobs"

To this he replied...with a smug grin on that enormous jaw line as if he was still the cats meow and thought he was desired by the attractive female "Well...I wish I could lock out those other people"

Everyone's jaw within earshot of him fell...(excuse the hidden pun). "Not the Rwandans" they all thought....This group was speechless at his bigotry.

The company was Nationair...the group was the flight attendants...

I was there. I heard Mulroney say it. Although we have no proof in form of an audio tape...we do have 62 witnesses hearing him say that.

http://www.nationair-canada.com/

Click onto "Lockout" for details of the labour dispute.

Just last week the town of Waterdown Ontario had a Conservative guy running for that riding. Harper went there to support him. I can't find the article right now but he was an ordained minister in some 'new' religion that went on public record stating homosexuality was a disease that had a spiritual cure.

When I say the Harper gang are right wing bible thumpin' bigots...and given my personal experience with Mulroney...how can I embrace this new government?

If it looks smells and tastes like shit....it is shit.

If I hear again "it's time for a change" I'm gonna puke. We're trading one pile of shit for another. AND IT KILLS ME THAT NO ONE SEE'S THAT HARPER HAS THE INTELLECT OF A HOUSE SLIPPER!!!!!

I feel like I am taking crazy pills...

In conclusion let me say I am neither Red Blue Orange nor Green...I am Canadian...with 30+ million in this country...this is all we have to offer as a choice of leaders with no vision? All we do is trade shit for shat every election.

You didn't answer my question.

But your incoherent rant above demonstrates that you have little or no understanding of what interest rates do. There is certainly no correlation between a Prime Minister jetting around the country and high interest rates.

I don't even know where to start. I'm going to go look at the Hasselhoff pic again, because you don't know enough about what you're writing about to even merit an argument.

Sadly the bulk of the populace seems to be this misinformed -- hence 12 years of corrupt rule, and still Toronto votes in a sea of red. Remarkable in an "educated" society such as ours.
Dearest cpl-atc

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how many properties you own...but I own a few. I even hire a property management company to look after them for me because it's a lot of work. So...interest rates and properties are kinda up my alley.

Any new government coming into power, the markets will react to it. Period. Espescially a minority government..if the people arn't sure about their own government...why would fickle forgien investors?

Of course, as you may probably know...interest rates are broadly determined by international financial conditions, with official rates in Canada being set by the Bank of Canada, acting independently of the government. So HArper could not claim that he would ensure that interest rates would fall or remain stationary. Instead he asserted that they would always be less under the Conservatives than the Liberals—a useful proposition given that it would be impossible to test.

Far from the growth figures demonstrating the “sound economic management” as Harper tried to claim under his government, they underscore the extreme instability of the Canadian economy, and its vulnerability to interest rate rises, which will be determined by broad international processes.

The concerns of working class families for decent housing at an affordable price, without the ever-increasing stress imposed by rising interest rates and house prices, cannot be met by the financial nostrums advanced by the leaders of either the Liberal or Conservative parties. They can only begin to be addressed through socialist measures that are grounded on the premise that the provision of basic needs, such as the right to decent housing, takes precedence over the demands of the financial institutions and money markets.

I'm surprised you havn't read this or saw it on the news. Rebuttal?

Get your facts straight. Interest rates were at 19% when Trudeau was in office. The highest the got under Mulroney's term was 14.05%.

Huh? Under whose government? You mean his projected figures?
"Harper will TRY to claim..." so yes..projected figures.

...My personal opinion.

.. it is worth noting that Harper's intelligence is well respected by many people. You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss him before he's had a chance to do anything.
Based on your replies here, you seem to be an intelligent person...I bet you are able judge someone's depth of intelligence just by looking into their eyes...

When I look at Harper...I see a block of wood. There is nothing in his persona that tells me he is a leader...despite him being a 'good person'. On the morning of the 24th...the press followed him to watch him drop off his kids at school...if anyone else saw this, please speak up.

It was so painful to watch the awkwardness of this man trying to connect with his kids. He was a stranger to them. Who shakes their kids hands at the school yard. He has no connection to his kids...how do you expect him to connect with the rest of the country. At least Mulroney had that.

At least he appears as though he'll have the good sense to maintain some priorities and focus, as opposed to Martin, for whom everything under the sun was "very, very important" and "fundamental", and who had 12,000 priorities, many of which were addressed in a half-assed manner by throwing millions at the issue.
Like Ernie Eves of the Provincial PC government...he thought he could do it on his own. Martin was so power hungry and greedy and sloppy he got what he deserved.

Well I remember the close to 20% interest days under the Liberals in the early 80's. Don't remember what their excuse was for that, but it was probably the Conservatives fault.

I had an interesting talk with Max Ward a few years back while I was in Yellowknife. He told me it was the Liberals who destroyed Aviation in Canada and I think he is a guy that ought to know.

I already pointed that out to the Liberals on this site and they just chose to talk about the high interest rates under Mulroney which we're lower than those under the Liberals.
