Re: If not AME then??
That was an average wage in 2006 at the company I was working for, and that was a full time rate, not contract. We actually got a collective raise fall of the next year we were so busy and burnt out guys were walking on that rate. FF 2022, $50/hr contract lol. $75/hr plus all the normal stipends is fair in Canada, and guys are getting that and more, it’s just not advertised.nine sixteenths wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 11:55 am$50/hr as a contractor is what was offered 15-20 years agoAhmad M wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 11:49 am Benelux Tek Group Inc. is #hiring experienced professionals for the aerospace industries throughout the Canada. Re: If not AME then??
So my advice, look at high paid trades and apply with your background. There is a major labour shortage in almost every trade right now. What’s happened to aviation also happened in other areas of work. You can be accredited 3 of the 4 years apprenticeship with a letter of recommendation from the employer and following the trade Equivalency evaluation process’. Someone mentioned Bruce power. Other large energy and construction companies shouldn’t be ruled out either. I’m seeing my AME cohort drop like flys this year it is insane how many are leaving aviation behind.

It’s doable in every province you just have to be smart enough to get accredited. I encourage anyone wanting to get out of AME work to visit their governing provincial trade board wether it be ontario college of trades, alberta industry training etc and ask about a “trade equivalency evaluation” and ask to speak to someone with the transition and your intentions.-42 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 09, 2022 10:05 pm I am not sure where Bug stomper is getting his intel but it’s pretty clear on the ITA website even for heavy duty that AME qualifications don’t mean squat. If you went from HD to Truck transport or Plumber to pipe fitter. It’s all on the web. Wind turbine is not red seal so…..plus heard that schedule/lifestyle doing that licks also.
Too much to post here but anyone reading this feel free to DM me for more info I’ll walk you through it, I’d be more than happy to help people out of this garbage and into something better paying with a better schedule.
In short there are provisions for outside trades like military mechanics, foreign licenses, domestic similar trades (automotive to heavy duty) and yes AVIATION. Toromont has an entire department dedicated to this task.

Does anyone have insight in this topic currently? Things have never been crappier in Canada’s helicopter market from what I’m seeing
Re: If not AME then??
It’s like a bandaid. Just tear it off. It’s less painful if you do it quick and before you know it it’s healing. So quit, go do something else. Fast.

Yep, lots have apparently, nobody is available this season to wrench on helicopters in Canada (myself included). Have really lost touch with lots of people in Canada but pretty sad when I’m clearly out and not available and still being harassed to come out and work.

I didn’t “jump the hoops”. Couldn’t help you there. However just pick a trade your interested in and get an apprenticeship going. Union shop if you can. Everyone is hungry for bodies and in all honesty starting from the bottom is better, less responsibility, less stress. Depends on where you are in your life/finances. Anything’s better than the AME side. Less liability/responsibility the better imop. Life’s too short for that garbage.

Re: If not AME then??
Very true, but living in Vancouver, the wage isn’t there for AME apprentices or Red Seal for that matter, so the faster you can get out of that the better. Yes you have more liability and responsibilities but if you’re good at your job, it’s not much of a problem.-42 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 7:20 pm I didn’t “jump the hoops”. Couldn’t help you there. I definitely was not using Vancouver as an example or any major Canadian city. Even as a journeyman you have my condolences if your just starting out living there and in fact your wasting your time like a hamster on a wheel. I assumed this person would be more established and looking for a course correction in their employment situation out of aviation. Best of luck in your future endeavours.
Re: If not AME then??
The automotive repair industry and Elon Musk are both very ani-union, gotta do your own negotiating.
Do not try to skip years or try to cheat the system, it will only hurt you. As you progress through the apprenticeship program, every year that you pass, the expectations increase. Your skill level has to match the level that you are in. Let's say you skip first year and get hired on as a second year. I give you a set a keys and tell you to put the vehicle on the lift, connect Tesla Toolbox, put the vehicle in service mode, and disconnect the HV system. Do you know how to do that? You should, you are a second year apprentice.
It is going to take you a decade before you start seeing success. Show up every day with a good attitude, be a learning sponge. Do all of the online/classroom Tesla training you can, if you don't, you will not advance. This is a trade of passion, not wealth.

Aviation will love you with that mindset. You are their dream person
Re: If not AME then??
Being a technician at Tesla, you are going to top out around $50 an hour. Starting out as a first year apprentice, it's going to take over 10 years before you see that 50 an hour. In those 10 years you have to learn how some of the most complex vehicles on the road work. You are going to be doing a lot of work/education for free. Trades don't pay much, but do offer good job satisfaction and security. There is more to life than money.Pat Richard wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 10:07 amAviation will love you with that mindset. Throughout the years. I have work with many Boomers that have squandered away all of their money. They have no investments, no retirement fund, and still have a mortgage. They cannot afford to retire because of their own doing, the most important thing to them is getting paid the money that they DESERVE. Plan ahead and live within your means.

Or what makes it more complex than say maintaining an A320 or B737?
I'd venture a guess that the aircraft are a lot more complex than a Tesla.
(I've worked on B737, A310, various bizjets and turboprops but currently wrench on various ground vehicles in a Combat Zone that I would say are more complex than an electric car.)
Re: If not AME then??
They are not more complex than a 737, it's just different. You will advance through the ranks faster because of aircraft experience but still will start at the bottom.all_ramped_up wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 11:44 amWhat makes a Tesla so complex?RLK wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 10:35 am Being a technician at Tesla, you are going to top out around $50 an hour. Wow. I figured the “work for free” and “pay your own training” only applied to the aircraft fondlers but I stand corrected. Elon obviously has his own cult all falling in line nice and pretty with the “can do” attitude. Pathetic honestly but just ripe for abuse. I don’t know what else to say but enjoy.

Pretty sure this is the same guy making a career change to aviation in his 40s reassuring himself publicly that he’s right and the masses with decades of experience in aviation are wrong. Automotive is a less desirable trade these days but way more diverse in wage depending where you go. Heavy Duty is where the money is, that or welding.-42 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 5:02 pm Wow. There are a few members here that absolutely piss on anyone that displays a slight amount of positivity. I don't feel that it is appropriate to take career advice from someone who is so bitter/jaded, and tries their best to deflate ambition. I hope these people find some happiness in their lives.
