You’re probably right. Hard to know how many pilots you would attract by trying something that makes common sense. Let’s just keep doing it the way we have for the last century.cdnavater wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 8:53 amGood thing we’re hiring FOs that are not really desired by other companies then!BetterLateThanNever wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 8:18 am Base transfer timelines seem quite variable. Everyone on the jets seem to get their desired base within a few months but the Q400 queue from West to East seems like 1 year+.
In the last class, 6 of 7 new hires that got YVR/Q400 were looking for Eastern bases. I wonder if they are shooting themselves in the foot by not offering known bases to FOs during hiring? Not sure how many will stick around for upgrade after living 1 year 3 times zones away, in the most expensive city in Canada with modest pay and no COLA. That's a big QOL hit that will likely sour a lot of people.
Joking but not really, a small percentage of new hires are close to upgrade requirements, I’m seeing some Captain upgrades on employee numbers from this year, meaning they got through the FO initial and immediately bid for left seat and were awarded before they even have 100 hours on type. Much smarter than attempting the DEC route but not without risk, still a probationary pilot.
Anyhow, I’m not sure how many more experienced FOs we would attract by having classes that have positions for a single base, I’m sure someone has looked at that.

You really have a bee in your bonnet over this, they(the company) are in charge of recruitment, I have no say in the way they do it!CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 12:27 pmYou’re probably right. If candidates were turning down the job, saying I accept if you can guarantee a certain base and it made a material difference, they would change it.
Let’s be honest, Porter assigns all new hires to YYZ to save on training costs and you know it, so what if you know you’re based in YYZ, if you really want a different base, you’ll bid for it a soon as possible, my guess is that there is no base change until after initial training! So, pilots accept the job knowing that eventually they may get their desired base, I’m guessing not all pilots who go there want a Toronto base!

All sorts of examples where people push back to the YYZ/YTZ offer and get the base they want. Other shenanigans I’ve recently been hearing about an initial base lock despite no mention of it in our guide.
For curiosities sake, what percentage of this sites posts are you and Duke going back and forth?

That entire thing was a complete failure. Very few made it through successfully. And then they sit junior with a crap schedule to make less than if they stayed at their previous job flying a king air.
Re: Base Assignment
Do you mean November 2025?
They’ve basically stopped hiring due to a lack of Captains. Hired hundreds of CPL flight instructors over the past 2 years but they can’t upgrade. The DEC thing was covered in the previous post. Not enough $$$ to attract actual experience plus as mentioned be bottom of the list on reserve. No one wants that for good reasons.

Oh. My friend was interviewed and did the sim in the summer. He passed and was told GS would be in November. He's still waiting for the date last I heard.Inverted2 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 1:05 pmDo you mean November 2025?

Re: Base Assignment
You can be a pilot at jazz today and fly to Moncton on a standup. And then be an AC pilot with their 30% flow in 2 years and then fly to Moncton on a standup.
Re: Base Assignment
Jazz doesn't have standups except in YVRCaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 6:46 pmYou can be a pilot at jazz today and fly to Moncton on a standup. And then be an AC pilot with their 30% flow in 2 years and then fly to Moncton on a standup.
Apparently classes do resume Nov. At least another one in Dec. Not sure if they will be the regular 3 weeks intervalInverted2 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2024 1:05 pmDo you mean November 2025?

Re: Base Assignment
Ya standups do exist outside of YVR, just because it doesn’t exist now in XYZ base doesn’t mean it won’t come back
Re: Base Assignment
It’s a do or don’t situation, if they don’t exist right now, they don’t exist, when or if they come back, they will then existTurboprops wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 10:37 pmYa standups do exist outside of YVR, just because it doesn’t exist now in XYZ base doesn’t mean it won’t come back
Re: Base Assignment
I’m glad they aren’t around now. Back in the day I used to have to do them and nodded off more than once on the morning flight home.

Welcome to Jazz.
If there was an airline (other than AC) that needed improved scheduling rules/credits, it is Jazz. 16-19 work days per month is not QOL and puts Jazz near the bottom for work/life balance.
Re: Base Assignment
Been told the same., earliest GS date is December or January.
Also was told, for me (idk hours or pool list order) , I'm probably looking for spring 2025 intake.
