A total of SIX Husky aircraft were eventually converted to the bigger British Leonides engine: BQC; EIR (GCYV); EIM; SAQ; MAN and EIR.

For the past 15 years I have collected pictures and stories (tall and otherwise) and technical info on the several other attempts to make a comeback with the Husky.

I still hope to publish this one day as a book before there isn't anybody around anymore that knows what the Fairchild Husky was.

Anybody that has any questions as to where the seven remaining aircraft are, or has photos, flying and/or maintenance experience etc., please contact me at:

Was the Gary Thompson, mentioned above, the same as the owner of Thompson's Camps and Nipawin Air? How did he die and when? I flew for him in the 70's.

Gary is alive and doing very well at Otter Lake.

Here is a picture of Super Husky CF-MAN in Whitehorse April 1979 being readied for float season. I believe it was later that season that Slippery Ed put her into the bush north of Mayo Yukon.

I can actually remember Barney Lamm getting involved with Harrison Air to convert the Huskies - OCA loaned me to Harrison to do a flight check on the 440 at the time (circa 1975) -- whatever happened -- the deal fell through - I know there was one husky kicking around Gimli for a short time and I can remember them talking about the conversion and showing pictures around the office. It was about the same time Barney became obsessed with metalizing the whoredyne and putting "small" norseman floats on beavers -

G'day

CF-EIM was fitted with a 550 horse power Alvis Leonides engine (installation was designed by Husky Aircraft) by Vancouver Aircraft Sales.

In 1970, the rights to the Husky were bought by Industrial Wings which at the time was a subsidiary of Harrison Airways. Production of the F-11-2 Husky failed to materialize including a turbine powered version (proposed in 1975). Now that would have been something, a PT-6A-27 powered Husky!

Cheers...Chris

If my memory is better than most other parts of me, I did work on SAQ in either 1966 or 67 while I was at Staron Flight Ltd. YVR. I think it was converted at KCR Industries on Cowley Crescent at YVR. We did have an Avenger and a Canso and also looked after the Stranaer (Stranny) that was to end up in the river for years (anyone remember the "river rats?") at that time and to me, being a young apprentice, the Husky was just another airplane but I do remember that it had just had the Alvis Leonides put into it.
I will chew on it and come up with some more names if I can.

The Gary Thompson I knew ran Thompson' Camps out of Missinippee Lake. Now, which one is still actually alive?

I worked for Gary after a year dispatching for Jack Anderson then I went back there and flew for Jack 1975 and 1976 (I think - logbook not handy).

Rainy Lake Airways operated a Husky out of Fort Frances back in the day. Don't know what ever happened to it but there's an old grizzly Hawker Pilot in Pickle Lake who probably knows!

MAN serial # 9 was with Rainy Lake Airways back in the 60's. Not sure what years. It was wrecked on July 31, 1979 in the Mayo YT area.

BQC serial # 1 was with Holiday airways in Red Lake in the mid 60's. Wrecked in 1973 on the BC coast.

EIL serial # 2 became C-GCYV. It was ferried to the WCAM in Winnipeg in 1984.

All of these aircraft are in storage with the WCAM (re-named The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada in 2015).

Here are pics of CF-EIL (C-GCYV) serial # 2 in YVR being prepared for the ferry flight to Winnipeg Aug 1984.

Second pic is in the infield at YVR after the first test flight. The tail wheel collapsed into the belly.

This aircraft is undamaged and in storage at St. Andrews Airport.
