That's the old BYN or CPA Hangar in the background there. It burned in about 1983 I think. It's on the east side of the airport.

I PM'd you. I think you are thinking of different hangars.bilko wrote:The year the old hangar burnt down?
Not to sure, maybe late 70,s or could be early 80,s but I stand correct if anyone knows more.
But it was years after the Paddle Wheelers burnt.
Re: Fire bombing Invaders in the Yukon
The only hangar destroyed by fire that I was actually present for was C hangar in 1999. Very sad.

That's an awesome picture! I spent a lot of time in front of that hangar this past summer. LOL.

The Old BYN Hangar burned in December 1940, Hangar B went in 1993 and Hangar C was January 1999. There may be others that I'm not aware of.

Great photos of the 26. I am surprised this thread has not been renamed or moved to "sexiest aircraft ever built." Hands down winner. Mr Guy and Mr Rain, I was under the stairs the other day and found my copy of "Chico: The Water Bombing Dog." Great stuff.

It's been years since I was last at the tanker base in Fort Smith. I do remember there were some photos on the wall at that base of a B25 Mitchell.Forestdump wrote:Great photos of the 26. Ok - Got the low-down re the hangar across on the east side of the rwy in that pic of CF-BVH from a very reliable source.bilko wrote:The year the old hangar burnt down?

"The hangar was in the background was built by the RCAF in 42 or 43. CPA later owned it (I assume, since they used it through the 1950's, and had their name on it, but maybe they leased from the D.O.T. (???) In the end it was used as a steel warehouse for Quadra Steel. By then I am sure the DOT owned it, as they intended to tear it down before it got arsoned. Yes, it had a control tower on it, originally operated by the RCAF. When I was learning to fly, the D.O.T. operated the control tower from there. It was burned by vandals in the early morning hours of October 1st, 1984."

As far as I have been able to determine, no Canadian unit operated A-26's in WWll. The new owner has/had some connection or affection with the "Sabertooth" gang. Their F-86 scheme was one of the better ones IMHO, and this is a pretty close representation of one of them.BD8 wrote:Airspray's ex T98.............. I wonder if the "098" pays homage to the 'ol tanker 98? It must..
Also though, just a side note here in a way; the roundel with the maple leaf in it was only a post-war marking. The Americans did the same thing post war, adding the red sripe to the 'stars and bars'. The Brits went back to the pre-war style roundels on the upper surfaces after the war.

Re: Fire bombing Invaders in the Yukon
Im not sure if your talking about the first hanger or the second;but I remember seeing the remains of one when I was there in 93/94 and then a second burned in 94.

Re: Fire bombing Invaders in the Yukon
The hangar in question was accross the field, on the East side. ('civilian' side; the West side of the field was exclusively millitary untill the mid 50's.)
-B Hangar burned in 1993.
-C Hangar burned in 1999.
Trevor, that would suit me well.

Re: Fire bombing Invaders in the Yukon
in 1986 G& M (Gerry and Mel) of saint Albert alberta was operating three B-25 in fort smith covering only the buffalo national park Jim reeve was the chief-pilot he lived in a trailer at the airport and the other three pilots me included lived in a mobile home down the road I cannot remember the names of the other two but I remember JIm with dog, and smoke pipe and wife! at the so-called tanker base. that summer I spent more time at the city dump rummaging than anywhere else including the pelican.
the planes were painted bright yellow all three of them. and we used to carry locals in the right seat as safety in case of manual gear operation since the pump handle was behind the cockpit
