donald corrected me:
Not quite true.
Many thanks; I stand corrected. Long time ago, and the information I got was third- or fourth-hand anyway, as I did not work for the company.

Unless you are currently advirtising with employment canada, you can layoff whoever you want. No law against it that I know of.

In this case they have let people go, and at the same time are actively up-grading their replacements.

Still a layoff?

If yes, then every company out there that wants to axe someone after they have completed their probation period, could just cry "layoff".

Am I understanding that correctly?
Are they hiring to keep the same staffing level? If so then it would be hard to call it a lay off.

Upgrading a replacement does sound fishy though. Do you know if they have hired?

So what specific work has dried up to bring on the layoffs? Exploration, mines shutting down, pax loads down???

The mines are the bread and butter of the entire NWT. When the mines slow down or shut down Yellowknife pretty much becomes a ghost town. It almost happened 10 years ago when Giant Gold mine shut down just when everyone thought the end was near they discovered the new mines.

Yes there’s some government work and a few fishing lodges and some native communities but the mines are the big chunk of business.

Tehara completely closed last year. BHP has been steadily slowing down. Snap Lake has slowed down and will be going into care and maintenance this summer and the other one has slowed down a fair bit as well.

Each mine at its peak had between 5 and 15 flights a day every day, PAX, Cargo, Exploration, Medivacs (1900, King Airs, Otters, Dash 7s, Dash 8s, 737s, and wacks of helicopters). Shut those mines down or even slow them down and all of a sudden you’ve lost a lot of aviation.

You've also got a lot of unemployed miners who won't have the cash to be flying south on vacations or flying north to go fishing or flying back and forth from their native communities. Further, every business and person in the Yellowknife save the government workers, rely on the trickle down effect of the mines. So now they won't have as much business and thus won't be flying as much.

There are a few lodges up here but most have their own dedicated planes and even if they used the big operators like Tindi it doesn't change the fact that tourism is going to be down.

Imagine the Yellowknife’s economy as a bicycle and aviation as the kid riding the bike. Well in the past couple of years that bike and kid were riding flat out. Now imagine the mines slowing or shutting down as someone putting a big stick in between his spokes. The picture that you’re getting is what’s happening to aviation up in YK right now.

This spring there’s going to be a number of mid time pilots that were laid off holding out for flying positions. That means the low time guys will still have a chance to get a ramp job. But after one season of being unemployed those mid time guys will break and take the ramp jobs next year. That’s why I think this is the last chance for low time guys to get even a ramp job for a while. So get all the licenses, ratings, endorsements and experience you can muster so that you’re one step ahead of the other guy and head out on a road trip later this spring and hit every place you can. Heck even get some buddies together and share the cost of renting a plane and keep flying to different employers until you get something, anything.

Anyone seen the hiring add in the January/February 09 issue of WINGS, Sunwest is seeking "qualified pilots, maintenance staff and Ground Crew". Good thing they went and laid off all of those qualified personnel.....

My God you would think LB could have rubbed his bald head and seen this coming when they would have ordered the add in September or November.

Do they fly for De Beers. Maybe they new this was coming.

128 De Beers workers lose jobs at N.W.T. diamond mine

Citing the worldwide economic crisis, De Beers Canada said Tuesday it is downsizing operations at its Snap Lake diamond mine in the Northwest Territories.

A total 218 jobs were terminated or scaled back Tuesday at De Beers Canada's Snap Lake diamond mine, 220 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife.
(CBC)

As a result, 128 De Beers staff members at the mine received termination notices Tuesday, while 90 contract workers were told their contracts were being suspended indefinitely or their work would be scaled back significantly.

"This is a very difficult but necessary business decision as we respond to the changing client demand for diamonds in the short term," De Beers Canada president Jim Gowans stated in a release.

"Our mines have accomplished a tremendous amount in their first year of operation and we must continue to overcome the economic challenges of today to position ourselves for a strong and long-term future in Canada."

The latest job losses are on top of 105 contract jobs De Beers terminated at Snap Lake late last year.

Also late last year, the company announced it would shut down the mine for 10 weeks this year, six weeks in the summer and four weeks at the end of the year.

"Unfortunately, the steps that we have taken to date, including the planned shutdown for employees ... are now no longer enough, and we've had to move to job losses as our last resort," De Beers spokeswoman Cathie Bolstad told CBC News late Tuesday.

The Snap Lake mine, about 220 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, began production last year.

At full capacity, the mine employs 662 people, Bolstad said. Tuesday's terminations bring the number of workers there to 379.

De Beers says the global economic slowdown has been challenging for all luxury goods, including diamonds. However, the company adds that diamonds are "uniquely positioned to withstand and emerge from the short-term uncertainty."

You know what they say, keep 20 people happy and you won't hear a peep, piss of one person though...

Seriously, I don't think happy people are nearly as likely to go running to the internet to brag about their companies as the upset ones. That and the obvious dis-like that company has to on-line discussions of their business.

Why is this thread still around?

Just do a search on Summit. Nobody would say s--t about them if there mouth was full of it. Summit was the best thing since sliced bread up until 2 months ago. Now look at what they have to say.
