most definitely resume materialDoc wrote:Would this count as a 350 mile cross country? He'll have to get his log book signed, of course. This will look interesting on a resume!

Re: Con Plane Goes Missing
Can sidewinders lock on to a 172 or do they have to use the 20mm cannon?

This pilot is in his early 20's. His friends are saying that he made several comments about wanting to end life in the past week. He has 1 year left of pilot school. Has flown solo several times. He is experiencing some personal problems. Lost both his parents in an accident. His family left is a brother out of town. I hope he comes in safely. He is generally a very sweet guy and his friends are mortified that this is happening.

"The aircraft had stayed at a "fairly constant altitude his entire flight," at around 14,500 feet, she said."
"The pilot hadn't communicated with authorities, and it wasn't known if he might be incapacitated."
"a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, put the plane's location north of Poplar Bluff in far southeastern Missouri as of about 8:15 p.m."

Okay, this is becoming very sad indeed... no more jokes guys. Hopefully he is not suffering from hypoxia and hopefully he realizes there is more to live for and comes in safely.

Once again the Canadian Aviation system working at its best...
I bet Greyhound and Brewster bus lines do a better job of making
sure its drivers are mentally stable...

Geez, he might as well fly straight to Guantanimo Bay. If he lives he is in a world of trouble!! NORAD is all over this!

Not sure about the radar CS of a 172, but an AMRAAM would probably do the trickInverted2 wrote:Can sidewinders lock on to a 172 or do they have to use the 20mm cannon?

But in seriousness, what the hell what this guy/girl thinking? Someone's life and career is over.

IF he makes it back on the ground safely, what do you think is going to happen to him?

AIM-9's probably could with the heat signature from a 172, but they could also use an AMRAAM.Inverted2 wrote:Can sidewinders lock on to a 172 or do they have to use the 20mm cannon?

Not allowed to fly again, not allowed to enter the US again (on the ground or otherwise), a possible criminal record hindering many aspects of his/her life, a shitstorm of legal crap that will eat their life for a good chunk of the near future, who knows.
Someone mentioned above that he was flying at almost 15,000 feet. I don't understand why you would fly yourself up that high in the first place. Could a pilot really be oblivious to the risk of hypoxia? There's a clip on liveatc of a pilot suffering from hypoxia, and then recovering. The acute and quick acting effect it has one ones cognitive ability is amazing.

On a purely economical point-of-view, it's pretty expensive itsn't it? How much is an AMRAAM? 700 000$? How much is 100 20mm rounds?FighterPilot wrote:

Guess it's just too hard to tell really... could go in many different directions. What channel are they broadcasting the story on? I can't find it.VikVaughan wrote:Just another canuck wrote:IF he makes it back on the ground safely, what do you think is going to happen to him?![]()

14500 is giving him a crazy range, didn't realize that a 172 could get all the way to missouri from northern ontario.
