Re: Vancouver Airspace Changes coming in July
As someone who grew up flying out of Delta Airpark at 9 months old, I am actually surprised by the reaction that this is drawing folks. The sad fact of the matter people is that the writing has been on the wall for these changes for quite sometime. With the increase of traffic into YVR and YXX and the massive growth of the flight training sector, not to mention all of the airports scattered into this area; these changes were FAR overdue in my opinion. Furthermore, if all of the FTU's were not whoring themselves out to foreign students, this problem of the area being far too crowded would be greatly reduced.
Times change and so do the rules. If ya dont like it, stay on the ground and buy a boat.
My rant

That is exactly what I did.Times change and so do the rules. If ya dont like it, stay on the ground and buy a boat.
In fact I just launched it again yesterday to start an new season of sailing when ever I feel like it.
Do you feel better knowing you probably won't have me flying in your airspace anymore?
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Sorry, for reviving a 4 year old thread....MichaelP wrote:As I look at the way the Lower Mainland is developing both on the ground and in the air this is becoming a less human place and perhaps it is developing into one of the Worse Places On Earth.
I have just reviewed the ATC empire growth and I wonder, with better aircraft equipped with far better navigational equipment why all of this is necessary.
I was there when they reduced the size of the London Heathrow Control zone!
Now I look at the opposite happening here.
Anyway, I've just been banging my head against the Vancouver airspace trying to figure it out, wondering why it has to be so complex. I just compared it to the airspace around London Heathrow (which has a larger population than Vancouver, and more aircraft movements). The London Heathrow control zone has a radius of about 7nm, and it's basically just two stretched ellipses side by side. I learned to fly around there, and I never remember it being too difficult to deal with. Vancouver's various TMAs on the other hand have a radius of something ridiculous like 30nm, and it's incredibly complex with a whole bunch of concentric circles, doodahs, blobs etc, and with a whole bunch of different frequencies. What possible reason is there for this madness, except to scare off little planes (which I imagine it does quite well)? I can't imagine it's a terribly useful or efficient way of dealing with high volumes of floatplane or flight training traffic, and I'm not sure what IFR traffic takes 30nm to climb above 2500 feet.

As I am sure many of you aviators in the Lower Mainland of BC know that there are many changes coming to the airspace effective 2 July and it doesn't look pretty. In fact, in many ways it seems more restrictive in an already restrictive environment....
There are some meetings scheduled and I would think that it would be a good thing to attend...Changes include airspace structure, classification, operating frequencies, routes, VFR check points, control zone boundaries, Victoria Harbour TAF, en route traffic advisory service over part of the Georgia Strait, airport arrival and departure procedures, tower hours of operation at Langley, additional transponder required airspace and operational notes.
