There are many ways to get your foot in the door. As far as being a Captain on a transport catagory aircraft; you need an ATPL. Look in the AIM lra section or CARs for ATPL requirements. As far as the time required, most airlines upgrade based on time at the company, and most airline companies require an ATPL before they will hire you. As a general rule of thumb, if you go to an airline, plan on about 5-10 years before your a captain. The faster you get your ATPL, the faster you get on an airline, and the faster you become Captain.

After you get your licenses there are two basic ways that you can start, working the ramp or instructing. After that the direction your career takes is as much up to you as it is chance. If you want to go up north then there are alot of jobs that you can get alot of flight time in a short amount of time, but the living conditions aren't as good. If you stay south the living conditions are better but the flying is slow.

The main goal is to just get that first job and see where you go from there.
