Probably why tower rolled the equipment -- because it sounded like an emergency. From an ATC perspective, there is no such thing as "requesting priority", so to speak. You're either first come, first served, or you've declared an emergency.Rockie wrote:I'm curious why the crew didn't declare an emergency. There is no advantage to a crew not declaring an emergency when such a call is warranted, because when you start doing things like reporting an electrical smell and then "request priority", ATC is thinking "emergency", they'll roll the equipment as a precaution (as in this case), and you'll still be looking at any potential paperwork or a phone call after the fact.
So if it feels like an emergency (and a suspected electrical fire is certainly an emergency, in my mind), call it as such and get on the ground sooner (potentially), where you'll have plenty of time to safely second-guess yourself, as opposed to doing so in the air because you didn't want to ruffle any feathers.
