The 'engine fail' light on the old '27s actually only warns you of a loss of thrust and auto-pack trip (if armed) after take-off thrust has been applied, and wouldn't give any warning if you didn't start the engine to begin with! Personally I don't see any problem with taxiing out with one engine not running, as long as all necessary systems are powered and it follows SOPs. In the '27 it would save 11 litres (20 lbs) of fuel per minute! Reading some of these incidents I can't help but wonder where these pilots were looking when they checked their stable engine instruments before brake release!?
