Theoretically, what are my job prospects?

You have a BA. Roughly translated, if you're a cute blonde, you can find a job in HR.
Otherwise, you need an education. To do anything.
With 250 hours, you can look forward to working on the ramp in some shit hole in the north.
Theoretically, you can jump into the right seat with a regional carrier. Realistically though, you're pretty much screwed.
Don't take advice from anybody dumb enough to have been married four times. Sorry septrepair.
Want to keep the relationship, and live near YSB? You may have to work in some other field. At least till something starts moving in aviation. Probably at least 3-5 years.
I know it looks grim, but if it were easy everybody would be trying to be pilots. Wait, everybody is.

No, they actually said on TV it's happening really really soon! In fact, I'm thinking of sending my resume to Air Canada - sure, I have 250h but all the high-time pilots are in the bush at the moment!ETOPS wrote:Is that when the pilot shortage is gonna happen?Doc wrote: Probably at least 3-5 years.

Re: Theoretically, what are my job prospects?
OK, after some thought, I've decided to take a measured approach to this.
I've cooked up an OK pilot resume with help from the xsbank thread, and I'm gonna start emailing/faxing companies that will allow me to rotate. 3 weeks on, 3 weeks off, 6 weeks on, 3 weeks off, or something like that. They gotta pay my way back to Sudbury though.
I will not apply to anywhere that has any kind of cash up front or bond or anything. I'm a grown man and my word is my bond. I told my last employer I would be with him for 3 years. That 3 years is up now. I have a track record.
I will not work for any employer that does not have a "safety first" philosophy.
Yes, all of this will limit my chances at getting that great ramp job in Thompson, but hey, I'm 40 now with no aspirations of getting a seniority number at Air Canada, so I've got nothing but time on my side. A successful vasectomy, no kids and a chick that's cool with that should get me a decent life, whether that's flying or working in a machine shop.
The resume is getting sent to Borek tomorrow (that's all I've heard so far (with minimal investigation on my part) that does rotation), and please pm me if you have any other tips for me. Or post it here, that's fine too. I'll be digging through previous employment posts in the meantime.
Thanks for all of the advice. This could get interesting!

If you want to fly for a living (ie: you are stupid) then do it!
Dreams are worth sacrifices, even if you fail to fulfill them.
Either the relationship works long distance or it doesn't.
If it doesn't then it probably wouldn't have worked long term.
Separation was never a problem between my ex and I.
We crashed and burned over a son who died far too early.
Do not try and predict life.
A women who cares for you will make it work. If you care for her you will make it work.
Otherwise you will end up resenting each other.
IMHO
YMMV

Women and planes have alot in common
Both are expensive, loud, and noisy.
However, when handled properly both respond well and provide great pleasure

Re: Theoretically, what are my job prospects?
Have you considered looking for a seasonal job with one of the float operators in that general area (there are a few that come to mind off the top of my head)? Might find something close enough that she could come visit on the weekends and still have the winter to hang out until you're sick of each other and be able to make good money at your trade. Oh yeah, and the PIC time would be king.
Oh and the advice re: long-distance is very sage. Even when you think it has worked, sometimes when you end up together at last you find you've been apart for so long and missed so much, you realize it hasn't worked at all. With a woman who won't follow you where you need to go, there's a high probability of either the relationship or the career goals coming to an end. Not to bum you out. I sincerely hope you're one of the few who pull it off. Best wishes, and PM me if you want some ideas for float ops over that way.
