There are user pay fees and then there are blatant cash grabs. If you can't accurately discern which category this falls into, you deserve to be bamboozled out of your hard-earned money. There are plenty of red flags to tip you off.

You can't tell me it costs $55 to update someone's file.

And it may not seem like much money to some, but over the course of a 40 year career it adds up to serious coin. Take all those $55 payments, stick them into savings earning just 3% annually and when you're ready to retire you have just shy of $6000...enough for a nice vacation.

While we're at it, damn that Ontario Ministry of Transportation too - they're just as bad as TC.

Why should I have to pay $74 a year (on my birthday no less) for some stupid little sticker to put on my license plate. I've already paid a good chunk of money to register the vehicle to begin with, and to maintain, operate and insure it. What's worse is that now you also have to have a Drive Clean certificate, which costs money. And, and if that's not bad enough, they (the MOT) are in bed with the private sector ... if you have outstanding toll charges for the 407, you can't renew. The bastards!

And on the topic of discrimination, why should residents of 'Northern' Ontario get off with only paying $37 a year for the same. What 'exactly' is my $74 a year paying for? Surely it doesn't cost that much to produce a little sticker, or to update my info in their system. The greedy bastards! It's 'death by a thousand cuts', isn't it?

"License Validation" - who ever came up with such a ridiculous concept anyways?

On a serious note, thanks for posting that link again CD. That's some great background info.

And as for "Egg Management Fee". Classic! I love that commercial.
I think that hits the nail on the head, 100%.

Why is it that commercial pilots are assessed this fee? Do you really think we are representative of the user group who uses air travel? We are doing our jobs to make a living and being charged by the government for it when it should be covered by the traveling public. What makes a medical fee separate from any other administrative paperwork TC has to take care of?

someone has to pay for the TC planes to fly around the country, and the enforcement.
lets be thankful there is no HST on it.

the user fee concept is flawed. charging only those who use a service. tell me one single person in this country does not benefit from aviation in one form or another? the whole country uses aviation, even if they are not riding on the planes.

the tax we pay on our salaries and the corporate tax paid by companies should cover every service needed.

our government wastes money and doesn't know how to balance their bank accounts. on a personal level if you did as bad as our government did on your personal finances you would lose your house.

i've seen TC inspectors arrive on a kingair at the same time as a commercial airline arrived from the same destination. that is where the $55 goes. to fuel an empire and keep the entitlement.

LOL this is funny... the industry thinks TC is the pain in the ass...I think it's more so the other way around.

As said before, both these taxes are pretty much at the lowest level ever since WWII, and the government has more to spend on than ever before like those lovely shiny new F35s we are buying.

TSB/TC are already extremely underfunded (like most public services), you can see this in the lack of TC inspectors, tower closures, airport closures etc that everyone here complains about. I am not defending user fees (I would actually prefer the rate the upper tax brackets pay to be greatly increased, and the corporate tax loopholes closed instead and maybe stop selling our oil/lumber at a giant discount to the US) but you can't expect to continually throttle money out of an service/organisation and expect it to run as well as it used to.

Of course, we're all overlooking the aviation fuel tax, that was put in place to pay for the air navigation services... That have now been privatized. Fuel tax still in place, but none of it goes to NavCanada. Should the fuel tax be removed? Sure! Will it be? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
