Re: Photos North of 66 (Arctic Circle)
Amazing photos guys!
It's always been a dream of mine to visit CFS Alert. Other than being CF, a scientist, or flying up in my Cherokee is there any way to get on the station even for a day? I know Borek flies up there periodically (from the looks of Rowdy's pics) is there anyway to get on one of those flights?

Yea, get a job with them. First Air does an occasional charter up there, what do you look like in a flight attendant's uniform?
Honestly, there's nothing to see in Alert that you can't see in Resolute, and the scenery is much more beautiful in Pond Inlet and Pangnirtung or Broughton Island. You'd be way ahead to plan a trip up to one of those places. Unless you just have to tell your friends that you've been to Alert, in which case, you're going for the wrong reasons.

Not interested in bragging rights. Ever since I found out about Alert I always wanted to go. Seems like the farthest north you can realistically get. Adventure calleth. I want to see the edge of the world.

That's an easy one, captain adventure. Get yourself a set of skis and a sled, trek from Resolute to Alert. People do the pole all the time! Voila, adventure called, will you answer? I know I know, its not what you're looking for. You want a picture and a t-shirt, not the other kind of adventure.

My company does a charter to Alert once or twice a year, I'm really crossing my fingers to be able to get that trip!

Station Nord in Greenland is at a similar latitude. Doesn't show on any enroute charts for some reason but it is there. Not much scenery there either. Alert does have some hills to the west.niss wrote:Not interested in bragging rights. Ever since I found out about Alert I always wanted to go. Seems like the farthest north you can realistically get. I have a good friend who flew copilot on the Argosy for Transair. Tells a story about the time they took off from an ice strip and forgot to release the Park Brake heading for Churchill. Apparently the landing was the shortest they ever did. The runway was only closed a few hours til all the main wheels were changed.

Ha, ha. I did that once. I'm ashamed to admit it. Luckily it was in rather a lighter aircraft and I landed on gravel so it didn't cause too much havoc, just some eating of delicious humble pie.

Re: Photos North of 66 (Arctic Circle)
I believe it. I remember one time landing on a paved runway after the big icestorm in a 172 that had about an inch of glass-smooth ice on it. You could taxi with the brakes on at normal speed. Looked strange to be taxiing along with the tires not moving.CLguy wrote:I have a good friend who flew copilot on the Argosy for Transair. I just made sure for the landing that there was no crosswind and landed at a slow speed on the 4000 foot runway being ready for a go-around. Turned out to be no problem. But also shows that you can easily leave a park brake on when on an icestrip and not have any unusual indications while taxiing out.
