Shes great very smart and very fast but also VERY independent.

I'd recommend a herding breed, probably be a good fit for you.

A friend of mine has a catahoula, its a hunting breed, has about the same build and size of a pitbull, but acts like a lab, plus has the bonus of having really short hair, very sweet dog, might be worth a look as well.

So... send your dog up flying, find a nice poolside bar and relax as you log very un-illegal PIC time.

LOL! Mine is all over that, at least from the car. Been several times we spotted her looking up out the window at a funny angle following something and she's locked onto an airplane!

Gotta get her up in the plane soon.

Carefull, you don't want to get violated for using her as a safety pilot. Unless she's a PPL. :P
Lol! I don't think the safety pilot thing is going to work out. We took her up for her first flight today, seems the attention span was a bit short, once we got to altitude she curled up in the back & went to sleep! Very interested in what was going on for takeoff & landing and a couple of spots of turbulence though.

Mission accomplished, no more concern about taking her flying than going in the car. It looks like she "got it" too, she didn't need more than one invitation to leap back into the plane afterward.

+1 on adopting a "pound pooch"!!!

There's no feeling like knowing that you gave a dog a new lease on life...
If you go to your local shelter and tell them what your looking for in as far as a potential canine match they'll be more than happy to help you!!!
My last dog was fully house trained and had no "issues".... I wondered for the first two weeks why his previous owner had parted ways.... I got a call from the shelter informing me that his previous owner wanted to touch base and see how his old pet was doing... I called my dog's old "family" and had a great chat... Turns out that the gentleman was taking care of his wife who was in the stages of advanced alzeimers... He was just too overwhelmed to also care care of a pet at the same time. We later met for a "reunion" and I have to admit that it was great to meet his old owners... All in all, I would never get a new dog unless he/she was a "pound pup"....

Regards,
TPC

Niss

While we're at it, you'll probably be asked to fill out an adoption questionnaire and be interviewed to see if you'll be a good parent! Check the links at your local shelter for the form and prepare your answers including lining up some references!

I saw an episode of "The Dog Whisperer" on how to pick a dog from the pound or rescue centre that suits your personality and household ... it has proven to be excellent advice. I looked at, walked and played with, a dozen dogs before I discovered a German Short Haired Pointer - Collie/Husky cross that had the personality traits advocated bt Cesar Milan, and the dog has worked out absolutely perfectly.

Its been 30 years since I had dogs, and this one is the best of the batch, because I took my time, did my research, listened to those who know, then put in time training him ... now a wonderful companion that has a special relationship with my wife and I. He's never more than 6 feet away from us, and travels everywhere with us on trips. The vet guesstimated him to be between a year and 18 months old. We've had him about 18 months ... time sure flies.

I had to fill out a questionaire, go through an interview, and a home inspection, and then sign a document that stated I'd never get rid of him except by giving him back to the adoption group to ensure some "Humane" Society or PETA group wouldn't kill him within hours of turning him over to their "caring" hands. Here's one case where PETA volunteers took animals from an animal hospital supposedly for adoption, .... and then killed them in the van enroute to their PETA office. http://www.petakillsanimals.com/Trial_Day3.cfm

Good luck with your choice Niss .... beware, like women who wear makeup, nylons, and high heels, ...... they all look good, but wait for the perfect match.

Well, I finally picked a new copilot.

I pick her up this Saturday morning from the canine control in Ramara township.

She's a shepherd husky mix around 6 months old. They found her abandoned near a barn in Brechin. She is in good shape, knows how to sit and stay and is partially housebroken. They have been calling her Tabitha, and I may stick with it but I also really like the name Kieko so I'll have to give it some thought.

If she knows how to sit and they found her she probably had a different name before she was tabitha. You can change it every week if it feels right and she's ok with it. Good work rescuing one. Kieko sounds more dog like to me but ours ended up staying Watson. There was never a consensus on anything better.

Best wishes, enjoy your new friend.

Looks like a great dog.

+1 for Kieko.

As far a costs go:
We got ours for free (spayed & neutered). Came with plenty of toys and a cage.
I was told that the key to keeping it cheap is to feed them well & exercise a lot.
we had him for four years and never went to the vet.

Costs me roughly 1000$ / year for food plus maybe 100$ for toys, leashes & accessories.

Not so much on beer as he tends to fall asleep quickly :smt040

That's a fine looking dog you're adopting! Good luck with parenthood.

What's the thing attached to the collar, something to keep her from escaping?

Keep us up to date with the upbringing. BTW, your choice but Keiko sounds like a good and unique name.

Beautiful dog Niss. I think I might consider Sina for a name because of those blue eyes. Sinatra.

Until you mentioned it Doc, it had slipped past me, but you're right.

I'm at a loss however to decide what feature of Kieko reminds me so much of Niss ... the piercing eyes was the first facial structure which came to mind. Then upon closer examination, I tended more toward the nose and especially the teeth. Then her paws and claws drew my attention momentarily, but was immeditely discounted because Niss wears his nails a little longer.

But ... and this may be a matter of over-analyzing the situation, I settled on the kink in the tail as the most distinctive feature that makes her most like her master.

All kidding aside Niss ... enjoy the "pup" and spend a lot of time training her in the basics of obedience such as sit, stay until released, lay down and stay until released, how to walk on a leash without pulling your arm out of the socket, and behave when meeting other dogs.

Then you'll have a companion, and above all, you'll be her leader that will keep her safe through the use of the basic commands. For example, when riding in the rear of my car, my dog will remain inside when I open the hatchback and say "Stay" until I either snap a leash on him and then give him the "OK" release command and he jumps out, or that I just say "OK" and he jumps out followed by a "Stay Close" command and he never goes more than 3 feet from my leg ... that way he won't bolt off into danger.

Glad to see you do a good thing and rescue her from somebody having to kill her because of being a stray and no home.
