Is it possible the diamonds weren't even on board? Seems like a great way to cover up a heist.

A new CBC report has been posted.

"The mystery of Swissair Flight 111's diamond cargo"
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/201 ... monds.html

98% of the plane was recover but no diamonds. Lloyds insurance paid out a $300 million dollar settlement in 2000 and applied for a permit to vacuum the sea floor (something already done by the investigators). They withdrew the application when victims' families complained that it was a grave site and shouldn't be touched.

This article is an eye opener as how the system works. How may of these incidents due to sloppy work and paperwork happen?

More info....... and a credible source at that, believe me. For the record and full disclosure, I do know the TSB individual referenced in this news article on a personal basis and did indeed have some discussions with him on this very subject. This bit of sensational journalism on that ex-cops theory will dissapear and the CBC will soon forget about it as an emabrrasment.

What I got from the CBC show was that just investigating this as an accident cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Investigating as a criminal act would cost much, much more. So, where does the money come from? Remember, this is Canadian authorities doing the investigating, not the mighty U S of A. Reason enough to cut losses and leave it as an accident.

I too watched The Fifth Estate episode on this and it was a big let down. I was expecting a 'MAYDAY' like approach, but to sum it up the show really only talked about how the ex-RCMP investigator had different theory and did not go into much detail on what his findings were.

I happen to know Sgt. Juby on a personal basis...none of his findings were sensationalistic. He was doing what he was trained to do, his JOB, which is fact-finding. And I might add, he is competent and exceptionally good at what he does. I know this first hand. Sgt. Juby's specialty lies in forensic/arson investigations. He is experienced. On a more personal note he is a caring, humble man with a ton of patience and a soft, quiet disposition. He did what any conscientious, ethical, professional, truth-finding policeman is supposed to do. It is evident he cared about the truth...aka the FACTS. All I would like to see is that those facts be followed up on...that's all! Doesn't the public deserve that much? That is the least that should have happened, but Sgt. Juby was "shut down". Was the RCMP scared of what a little more probing may have revealed? Looks that way to me. It is a shame and an embarrassment that Sgt. Juby's employer did not seek the truth as did he. I think it is criminal too. And I do believe that shutting him down had a lot to do with money. The cost of a criminal investigation would have been more than the RCMP could bare. And let's face it, policing is no longer a service, it's a business. The government gets $$$ from tickets and fines, thus they push their officers to lay charges and serve tickets. It is a well known fact that the Nova Scotia court system is inundated and overflowing with frivolous charges before the courts. I cannot believe that Sgt. Juby was reprimanded by his employer for doing his job! Those four senior officials who 'demanded' that he fix his notes should be the ones reprimanded. The RCMP preaches ethics and accountability to it's membership. So why should "Do as I say, not as I do" apply and suffice for them? Absurd. This just goes to show that the problem in this modern age of policing starts at the top. It's the members on the front lines who take the heat. White shirts forgot what is was like to pound the beat. Maybe they didn't pound it long enough and should go back at it to refresh their memory.

I have to question why so many years after the fact this becomes news. Airplanes have magnesium in them, it burns. To think the TSB would turn a blind eye to such allegations during the investigation is quite simply laughable. Wait til the reconstructed carcass is sold as scrap then run to the media with a theory and sway the media and public to believe you weren't taken seriously. The evidence is gone, the investigation is complete. Or are we really to believe the TSB, RCMP, airworthiness authorities, MD (or Boeing) and Swissair themselves when presented with the evidence all turned a blind eye? If there was a shadow of a doubt, one of the interested parties would have strongly pursued it, from either a safety or liability standpoint. Let the people who know aviation do thier job, finding burnt magnesium in an aircraft accident is like finding water in a river. Hardly newsworthy. Wait til this guy discovers what Skydrol does when misted at 3000PSI over an open flame

I am sure that something must have come up that started someone questioning the investigation. This was not Sgt. Juby trying to gain attention. He simply isn't that type of man. He was the little guy on the totem pole...when you are just one person against large organizations (especially when they are handing you your paycheck) you feel quite helpless. And now that we have seen just how unethical this organization can be is it any wonder? In any event, I think Sgt. Juby's point was that even if the magnesium did come from the plane, it is also found in incendiary devices, and this should have been looked into farther to rule out any suspicion. This is what he is trained to do and that is his job. Find evidence and investigate. Just like a murder investigation...there may be several suspects, but you don't stop your investigation there...you follow up until you can narrow the pool down. That's just how it's done. The point of the Fifth Estate's episode was to show that a mystery still lies within the depths of the ocean. The jewels, the insurance claim, the TSB worker who sided with Sgt. Juby and felt it should be looked into farther...it's not just one piece of the puzzle, it's the whole picture. It does make for a good story, whether it was aired 10 years ago or today. The facts remain. As far as evidence being long gone, again, I believe that would be because some didn't want the evidence to be known in the first place. The proverbial broom that swept it all under the carpet. Let this be a good lesson for the next such crash.

This piece of over the top sensational journalism has disappeared as fast as it was introduced. It is a non-story by an ex-cop who, as publically stated by the TSB Deputy Investigator, was nothing more than a photographer – that was his job.

It’s gone, done for – over and out!! :   :vom:

I suspect there is about to be a huge bump in tourism around the area. Probably a great place to set up shop with a dive charter boat now, going to be lots of folks interested in diving there me thinks....
:)

BUT....if this was a coverup or foul play in anyway, who says that diamonds and cash have actually been loaded on board?? Sure, there might have been a manifest showing it that it was loaded, but could be just empty crates. If someone was planning to steal that, they would try to get rid of evidence (aircraft) so that no one can trace the missing items. Come on, there were plenty of movies made in Hollywood on that, it's not rocket science
