Hey ettw. I'm pretty sure you can turn it off on the 530. We have a 430 and 530. 430 for heading and time etc, 530 for map. Just have to read up on it a bit.
As for all the posters regarding using TAWS to push weather, people who will use that will use any manner possible to do it. It's why it is being legislated. Like I said before, you can't legislate against stupidity. If you could, we could legislate parliament out of business.

Lost,
I can't remember the 530 but the 430 TAWS is enabled/disabled using the "MENU" button when on the TAWS display page. From the "MENU" page you will have options. I'm sure the 530 is the same.
I cant imagine using TAWS alone for pushing weather! I have flown in some pretty crappy wx but I've ALWAYS had my finger on the map with GPS and if available, wx radar to supplement. But to use TAWS to help you get the job done is, well, stupid.
What about TCAS? Personally I'd like to have both to back me up because I'm a human being and I make mistakes and so do the other people around me .
Cheers

Looks like a Garmin 430 doesn't meet the minimum requirement, TAWS class B. The 500 series can.
Re: TAWS required for 6+ pax turbine aircraft
The new Garmin GNS series can with both the 700 series and the 600 series, which replaces the 400.

Like many regulations, TC is applying a scalable solution. As you work your way up from a private VFR operator all the way to a long range all weather airliner, the requirement adapts to the prescribed level of safety and the overall cost of the aircraft. It's a pretty logical plan that is actually done to appease the operators.
If you're a commercial Beaver operator, you don't have to equip at all. If you're big iron, then you need the Cadillac version and if you're small enough and don't fit any waiver you can install the economy model.
Abuse? There will always be abuse and there already has been. Much of it regarding following moving maps and terrain displays come from the west coast float and amphibious operators who don't need it in the first place. Electronic courage in the way of a Garmin handheld has already killed a few dozen people out there. That doesn't mean the mandate shouldn't proceed as planned. It just means that some operators need to clean up their act.
