Re: Equipment Bid
New hires going to the LCC will make less and be subject to different work rules than all mainline positions though.
Re: Equipment Bid
Gonna hit you a bit when the Skipper heads off to the loo and leaves you in charge of a 767 at Fl350 m.81 enroute to Venice with two FA's admiring the Northern Lights from the flightdeck windows. He's definitely gonna need some help keeping those 14 new-hire Flight Attendants in line on the lay-over. I'll certianly never forget.

Re: Equipment Bid
Year 1-4 all mainline RPs and FOs get the same hourly rate, so it depends on how much you fly... if still dozing starting year 5 and on a new hire 777 RP would do a bit better hourly than an EMB FO, all others would be a little less 787/330/767 in that order.
Re: Equipment Bid
What would be the reasons that someone would bid on an RP spot over an FO spot?
I hear that RP positions can be pretty boring (high level cruise only), but can allow you to see the world, and to get your flying done in a relatively shorter number of days (due to long haul).
But besides that, I understand FO positions are more challenging, more dynamic etc. Therefore RP is the least sought after position we new hires bid? Just trying to get a sense of what drives the bids for RP or FO as a new hire and which is the most sought after and why.

Re: Equipment Bid
A myriad of reasons. Lifestyle, base, ego, personal situation or a lack of choice.
I think that new hires will be offered slots amounting to the size of the class at which names will be drawn. This will be based on company demands. It will not be a free for all for the 240 open spots.
The dynamic will shift from here on in. New hires will slot in on the bottom somewhere. 4 year flat pay changes a lot.
The 787 RP may become the most junior as The lifer cruisers from two contracts ago will slowly move on and not likely move sideways.

Seems like more like a personal choice. If you have the choice I suppose. What would be the reasons that someone would bid on an RP spot over an FO spot?

Out of curiosity, are you currently in pool? or starting gs soon?

Re: Equipment Bid
Ego? That's kinda funny. As an RP your basically like a penguin. You have wings but you can't really fly.
Re: Equipment Bid
It's a long career. Plenty of time for hands on flying. I started Air Canada as an oiler. Sat sideways for 8 years on the DC-8, L1011, and B747. Saw the world during that 8 year period. Had some great times. After 8 years as a Second Officer (oiler) I made the move to the right seat of the 767.av8tor_assrope wrote:Ego? That's kinda funny. As an RP your basically like a penguin. Some of my initial classmates went straight into the First Officer position on the DC-9 when we got hired. While I was off seeing the world, they were going to places like Thunder Bay and Moncton. It suited them. Not for me though. I enjoyed my time as a Second Officer.
I've been a First Officer and Captain for 25 years now. Looking back, would I change things and have gone straight into the right seat? No way!!!!!
Re: Equipment Bid
You just proved the ego argument.Ego? That's kinda funny. As an RP your basically like a penguin. You have wings but you can't really fly.
I'm an RP and I love it. I miss the hands on flying, but I've already done that for a decade, and I'll get decades more. Great schedule, family time, great destinations, longer layovers, better hotels, better per diems, no sitting around airports all day, better airplane food, easier on reserve, and you're just as involved in the decision making/crm process. You do fly with some older crews, you're often tired and jet lagged, and the legs are very long, and yes, no taxing, applying power/rotating, or flare.
The pay is the same for 4 years, so pick what you like. Haven't talked to any who hate their job.

Well said. I love it.snag wrote:You just proved the ego argument.Ego? That's kinda funny. As an RP your basically like a penguin. You have wings but you can't really fly.

Re: Equipment Bid
Ego is the biggest reason. Hands on flying if you haven't done enough already. I moved from an F/O position with the company backwards to an RP position. I miss the flying, but I have way too many hobbies to fly and enjoy them all. Sorry, lifestyle over ego wins this race. That is until I get a family and need some time away from home :p
It's all personal preference. Can't handle not flying, go F/O.

Re: Equipment Bid
A young lady in my daughters group has a fascination for things aviation, flying to be exact. My opinion to her was if airline employment is where you wanna to be, then Air Canada is your place. Different aircraft types, abundance destinations in all levels, Polar/Pacific/Europe/South America/Mid-East etc. and domestic/USA as well. I also indicated from what I understand by posters on this site, salary isn’t great for the first few years but steadily improves (I directed her to this site). Plenty of opportunity as per your observation as you know lot more that I would ever know about AC as never worked for any airline.snag wrote:You just proved the ego argument.Ego? That's kinda funny. My dream job would have been flying an A340 for AC but(a) I am way over the hill and(b) the A340s are no longer with AC, haven't been for a while.

Re: Equipment Bid
Good day all,
Any chance to know what were the open spots offered to the new group of pilots who started their course on March 4th...?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Equipment Bid
OK, an honest question here.......
If one were to get lucky and land RP on a heavy, would it be justifiable to say that unless a mass retirement at the top occurs, you are likely to be "stuck" (sorry, best word) as RP for 4 years, or longer?
I, personally, would prefer going to RP position. Travel, days off, big steel....all seems in line with what a national carriers driver should enjoy! HOWEVER, I would like to fly at some point!
Is it feasible to move from RP to FO and still be able to bid RP. Or is your seat YOUR seat?

I believe newhires are technically on a 4 year equipment freeze, but the company is free to waive that at any time they wish. I personally feel it is very unlikely you would be 'stuck' if you were attempting to bid out as long as there were some fo openings, but thats just a gut feeling.
The money is the same for the first four years as long as you aren't low cost, so if you like the idea of an RP spot I say bid it without hesitation.
Re: Equipment Bid
Does one really have to be so lucky? It seems by the bid there are many spots available in both YVR and YYZ.If one were to get lucky and land RP on a heavy
Re: Equipment Bid
Is there a source, anywhere, to indicate which routes are served by which a/c and base?
