My friend you are loosing the big picture here. This is not a fight about what company is getting how much from the government it is a fight for our life as pilot in Canada. In 1945 we lost thousand of shipman during the war sunk by Germans submarines. If it would happened now we would have lost thousand of foreigners. Almost no Canadians are working on ships owned by canadian companies. The ship are registered in foreign country and the shipman are foreigners.

Right now you have the possibility to be hired by Air Transat or Air Canada with 2000 hrs and a check on a B-1900. But forget about Sunwing and Canjet who will be operating almost 40 narrow body jet aircraft this winter. So put your anger into that direction if you still want Canadians having jobs in Canada.

If the Government of Canada agrees with that argument and allows, on that basis, these airlines to hire type-rated foreigners that pay no taxes in Canada instead of hiring and training Canadians, just to save money, and in the process, leaves the Canadians on EI, the Government of Canada is allowing Canjet and Sunwing to make that saving by:

1) Keeping experienced Canadian pilots on EI (most of my 57 AT laid off pilots among others)

Out of curiosity, what would a laid off AT guy be able to draw on EI per month? Frustrating, seeing our government spend money like this, when there are pilot spots for them going to foreigners.

2) Depriving itself of income tax revenue that it would have if the jobs were all held by Canadians instead of Foreigners

This is where it gets interesting.

Sunwing quoted $11,000 salary per month per Captain, and $8,000 per month per F/O.
Assuming that between the various levels of government, your tax burden would be 40%, a Captain would pay $4400 per month in taxes, and an F/O $3200. Now multiply those figures out to figure out what kind of money 100 imported Sunwing Captains and 100 imported Sunwing F/Os would be costing the treasury on a monthly basis, and it is $760,000. The six month period the foreign crews will be in Canada will deprive all levels governments an estimated $4.5 million in tax revenue.

Then, there is the other side to it. I suspect the ~200 foreign Sunwing pilots will send almost all of their earnings home. Sure, there will be some meals at Tim Hortons, grocery store shopping, and other incidentals, but for the most part, that money is going to be transferred from the pilots to their bank accounts in their European countries.

The jobs that Sunwing has these contractors doing should be performed by Canadians. If it were performed by Canadians, the money Sunwing paid them would be spread around the Canadian economy, circulated and recirculated and recirculated some more. There would be another 200 well-paid positions, likely centered around YYZ but some based elsewhere, and the way pilots commute, the money would be benefit the entire country. The pilots would be spending their paychecks buying houses, cars, at the grocery store, purchasing goods and services. Salaries for the hypothetical ~200 Sunwing pilots who should be Canadians instead of contractors would likely be in excess of $7 million for the six month winter season - a decent little boost to our economy. That money would ultimately contribute to the overall strength of the Canadian economy, and create other jobs.

Remember, this is not because there are no qualified pilots in Canada.

This is to save these airlines the expense of having to train its pilots so they can better compete against the other airlines.

Did I lose you anywhere or do I make perfect sense ?

Makes perfect sense to me

It should be 485$/week as stated on the Employment Insurance website... And it could last for close to 40-45 weeks...

How much will I get?

We cannot tell you exactly how much you will receive without having processed your application. However, we can tell you that the basic rate for calculating EI benefits is 55% of your average insurable weekly earnings. As of January 1, 2012, the maximum insurable earnings amount is $45,900. This means that you can receive a maximum amount of $485 per week.

I am sure you guys are quite thrilled to pay us almost 2000$/month to stay home... and look for work!

Thanks Ottawa for working in the best interest of all Canadians...!
