I'm sure you witnessed quite a "cunning array of stunts" performed by carefree, wonderfully fit agile women on those sailboards and it would have been tempting to ease off on the power just a little to prolong the time available for observation. It must have been a delicate balance to have just enough power to make sure you didn't come off the step vs max viewing time during the scoop.

Comments are a little embarrassing to read. Scooping isn't that much different from landing on a runway... so how much width do you think you need? As for flying experience, I'd be surprised if most crews didn't have 30 years, and 15000 hours between them. Props.
