WOW. You guys are good. Another P-38 gone. Just like the Hurricane lost in the UK several years ago as another aerobatic genius decided an impromptu low roll was a great idea.

That clip contains footage of the Frecce Tricolori crash at Ramstein, Germany in 1988. Having witnessed their show up close earlier in the year and spoken to some of them I can say with certainty that it was arrogance and a belief that rules were for lesser mortals that caused that crash. They too resided at "macho grande", yet in an instant they killed three of their own and 67 spectators while seriously injuring almost 400 more when the one jet cartwheeled into the crowd.

A little bit of humility goes a long way.

Then there was a guy that went down a sink hole relaxing or sleeping in his house. If it's time to go it's time to go. Might as well live life while you can.

Bottom line is low level aerobatics reduce the margin for error regardless what the pilot's background is. Many very competent and not so competent aerobatic pilots have lost their lives destroying some rare aircraft over the years. Some people think the risk is acceptable while others do not.

We also lose people on non aerobatic crashes due to unintended contact with ground. This thread started off with very low approaches.......which were much lower than necessary.

Still sad to lose people and rare machines in crashes.

Quite a few have come to grief flying too close to the ground in the mountains. Sparky and Steve Fossett come to mind.

Why do you people always force me to stand up and speak out?

I believe Mr Lamarr is trying to point out that both Hedley junior and the young Mason fellow are good pilots because they practice a lot and perhaps even study some book lurnin.

Obviously they also have the advantage of being in a family where they are encouraged and have access to airplanes. There is benefits to both pieces of that puzzle.

Not everybody get lucky enough to be born with a golden spoon and/or in a family with strong background in aviation.
You need either one to achieve that.

As a 17 year old from a poor family I paid for every minute of my own flying by working. Like most people I didn't have a wealthy, egotistical savant as a father with a fetish for low level aerobatics. But I got very lucky and the Canadian taxpayer trained and employed me to do something Hedley could never do.

Luck, and an ability to fit in. Don't ever underestimate the power of being able to fit in without pissing everybody around you off.
