Here's another quote from Cat Driver from this very topic:
Joe does not keep his airplanes up to airworthiness standards
If you're going to quote me or take issue with a post of mine, read the whole thing and/or quote the whole thing.
After watching the newest episode, my only observation is that Joe put no effort or money into getting his new planes into airworthy condition before he needed them, but he apparently had plenty of money and time for putting Buffalo logos all over them. That says a lot about his priorities.
Neverblue, the show is enjoyable to watch and the conversation usually starts out on a positive note but soon goes downhill. Most of us enjoy watching these old piston slammers still being operated. Now I'm very sure that hundreds of flights are made with these aircraft that are totally uneventful but nobody is going to tune in to watch that so the show is made up of all the arsetighteners that happen over a period of time. These events also happens with new age jet aircraft, obviously not as often but they do happen. I've lost track of the number of times that Joe has been called everything under the sun like being an ogre to work for and running a string of flying death traps and having no regard for any safety standards. I'm quite sure Transport is checking up on his standards on a regular basis. Some of the posters on Avcanada love to go digging through old posts and clipping out just the few words from an unrelated thread that suits their purpose. Many of these comments are an insult to those dedicated engineers that bust their ass to keep those old birds flying. If Buffalo was so dangerous to work for I'm sure all those pilots and Engineers have more that enough skills and experience to go elsewhere but they prefer to stay right where they are.
I would hazard a guess that Air Spray is doing heavy maintenance on Buffalo's Electras.

As NWONT and others have said many times already, it's an (un)reality TV show. A few 45 minute concentrated collages, heavily edited for maximum drama, of all the typical crap that goes wrong over a many month period at any business. The real time lines, context and back stories are entirely incidental as far as the show’s producers are concerned.

I don't doubt that, but it's pretty obvious that they didn't splice together a bunch of repairs on that Electra that were being done over the course of a year. I mean, it was sitting in a snowbank with a bunch of previously-existing snags, so they were clearly not in the process of getting it airworthy. The narrator even said that it had been sitting in Red Deer since Joe bought it. He didn't want to pay to get it airworthy until he absolutely needed it, and he didn't want to pay to get it de-iced, but the second he got it he had Buffalo logos put all over it. It doesn't matter if it's able to earn revenue so long as everyone can see that it belongs to Buffalo, just like Mikey wearing nothing but Buffalo Air Wear during his press conference; he was trying to explain a major safety issue and allay fears about it being a rinky-dink operation, but instead of trying to look professional he wore a hoody and baseball hat with more Buffalo logos on them. It's about marketing and branding, and they also happen to operate some airplanes.

He can get paint & logos cheap and fast ... having seen the painters at work and what they're paid. (No engineers degree is required to paint an aircraft.)
When cameras are rolling on the grounded aircraft, they can't portray the state of airworthiness regardless how much cash is already invested; but the footage sells.
They (he and the lending institution) must be thinking why invest money prematurely to get it airborne if not ready to use it yet.
Cat Driver wrote:Why don't all you guys who slam Joe go out and start your own airline and show him how to run an airplane business?
Can't be done, because you'd need to inform the banker of the new business strategy (good luck with that) which soon is no longer a secret (they know where all your money and backing is) and makes it real easy to pull the plug on you when it's a bit difficult.
The only way is to be be shrewd about everything, and the only way to be like that is to have been in it for a long time with lots of reliable connections.

Here's the full episode on History.ca. The episode usually goes up the day after it premiers on TV.

Hmm yeah the site restricts viewers to in Canada so I tried my VPN from the Toronto and Vancouver servers but it just returns an error message "Concurrency Restriction". So I guess there's too many people trying to stream it at once...? But thanks for the link.
Usually some kind soul uploads a copy onto Pirate Bay, just taking longer than usual this season. Not that I'm in favour of getting around copyright restrictions normally, but it's not like the show is terribly popular in Dubai.
