Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
I thought "known" icing was known due to the fact that someone had actually picked up ice and reported it. Forecast icing differs in the fact that the weather office is speculating that icing is likely to occur. I remember being told not to report light icing as then the FSS guys would change the forecast to "known" and end up grounding a lot of other aircraft that had boots and hot props but were not certified for "known" icing.[/quote]AEROBAT wrote:[quote
What's "Known"? IFR in a 172, I ran into it. Wasn't forecast. I got out of it. Nothing illegal there. How do you know that it was forecast for that day? In really cold temperatures it doesn't usually form... only ice crystals. So he could have be perfectly legal.
"Known" is the operative word, just like "ice adhering to the wing". Makes the difference in being legal or illegal.
I would suggest if you are going to give a pirep you should report what you have actually encountered, NOT what somebody told you , you should report. You are not doing anyone a favour by inaccurate reporting. Those other a/c if not certified for icing shouldn't be flown IMC when there is known icing, there is a reason for that I am sure. If they decide to go it is at their own peril.
How would you feel if one of those non certified a/c went out and ended up piling it after you reported no icing? What is light icing for one a/c might be a different story for others.

Does this really need to be a sticky?
The only three things a wingman should ever say: 1. "Two's up" 2. "You're on fire" 3. "I'll take the fat one"
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Why, what's wrong with this thread being a sticky for as long as the show is currently on TV? Would you rather see 10 new threads a week on it?

Judging by the number of replies and times the thread has been viewed I'd have to say yes. Why, in your opinion shouldn't it be? I a haven't talked to many, if any pilots that are not following it either by the way. My whole family is enjoying the show. Some of the flying scenes alone is enough to keep me interested!Redneck_pilot86 wrote:Does this really need to be a sticky?

this is a great series
enjoy it for what is

Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
I like it...I don't think it was meant to be a documentary. It's better than a lot of crap that's on TV. It exposes a type of flying that I bet half the pilots on here have not experienced....just enjoy the show I'd say.....

also! i posted a story on their website (there's an interactive story map of flying in the arctic) and the production company sent me a free hat. a nice winter one too with the show logo on it.
i like the show... kind of fun to watch other rampies bust their backs.
and even happier i wasn't the one changing the tire on the C-46 in that wind.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show, I just think that the thread is active enough to stay near the top while its active, and will eventually die off.

That's why duallys rock. Don't even need a jack, just some 2x6s or 2x8s in front of the good tire and put the coals to her. Not as likely to fall over as a puny bottle jack on low-grade pallet wood.all_ramped_up wrote: and even happier i wasn't the one changing the tire on the C-46 in that wind.

Another great show I thought. I think it covered alot of ground tonight. The challenges of ferrying an airplane built for summer in winter conditions without the range for the trip, windshear, working on engines outside in minus 40, CRM, no radio contact with one of the a/c for a while, and last but not least.... the challenges of maintaining a relationship in avaition!!

All the white-collar corporates I know would never call the Blue-Collars that work with them Hillbillies or Meatheads and would never link them to the movie Deliverance, a movie that featured retribution after a violent homosexual rape.
I guess I'm blue-collar in the way I think.

Did it occur to you that the producers would try to pick out the more entertaining lines or conversations picked up throughout the filming of the show? When working in those conditions humor goes a long ways to make the day go by. If the flavor of the day is redneck humor spiced up with some swearing, so be it! Trust me cause I've been there done that.EngineGuy wrote:Wow, as much as I love bush flying and back country flying I am way more white-collar corporate in the way I think and articulate myself.

I spent about ten years in the bush and people up there are more laid back, less afraid to be them selves, and less worried about what the next guy or girl thinks as far as what you say, wear, drive or do. I find the reactions I get from some city slickers hysterical when they find out I lived in a mobile home.... on more than one occation. They could not fathom lowering them selves to living in a mobile home. Little do they know it was brand new almost 1400 sq ft with open concept, cathedral ceilings, 2 1/2 bathrooms, skylights, jacuzzi tub etc. Nicer than any apartment I have ever rented!
