I'm not dipping my toes into pilot wages, but. There was a paper out some time ago that stated that it cost 87% more to run an airline in Canada than it does in the US or Europe. I don't think you have to look too far past the federal government to determine why Canada is "different" The Federal government see's the aviation sector like a big cow, they won't feed it, but there is a line up of bureaucrats milking it.

Wouldn't the additional operating expenses also affect a foreign airline operating here? example, taxes on gas or food or high airport fees etc. So most of the additional costs must be coming from HQ, whether thats from higherups or government stuff.countdown wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 7:18 am I'm not dipping my toes into pilot wages, but. If you opened up Canada to US carriers they wouldn't touch 90% of the routes. They would operate the few that they can make money on due to the volume and not touch the rest.

You can’t blame them for doing what they are doing right now. 95% of us don’t have the right to work in the USA. They have a captive audience. Why would they pay more when they don’t have too. Toronto is one of the most expensive airports on planet. Until very recently it was number 1. The fees here are also insane, just look at the breakdown of your fare and see how much the airline is actually getting. If you count live in any city your airline or the partners/code shares flys too and they made a schedule with a confirmed seat the pay would be more palatable.

For me, it’s the terminal 1. The most modern and efficient airport terminal worldwide. I even ask my travel agent for extra stops in YYZ even thought there are direct flights available to my destination and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.
One time I showed up at my gate for an oversold flight and they were looking for volunteers to check in their carryons for free. I said “Wow, three checked bags for free!” And the nice friendly AC gate agent laughed and said “I’m going to call you 3-for-free!”
Now the staff always greets me with “hey it’s 3-for-free!” And ALWAYS give me my free gate checked bags. It’s such a fun and cool atmosphere at YYZ T1. I go there at least 3 times a week for a warm 12$ beer with Clamato in a stained glass, 1-2 times a week for fresh bento sushi’s and I can even skip the gym and work a sweat walking for 45 min to the international departure for a delicious dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs. I even dip my bento sushi in wasabi sauce, it’s delicious! What a great airport terminal !

You aren’t the only one that gets recognized by gate agents. Although nice, it’s kind of depressing really…

I might even buy you a $12 Caesar for that comedic gold. Or a 7$ starbucks, If you don’t mind delaying the flight cuz there’s 80 people in the line.

Toronto bathrooms are usually dirty. Escalators and moving sidewalks are constantly broken. Avoiding getting run over by a golf cart is a sport done by all.
Instead of fixing a leak in the ceiling, they place a security tray on the floor and leave it there for 6 months.
Most taxiways are unlit, using reflectors instead.
There are taxiway signs at confusing intersections that haven't had working backlighting in years.
The Link Train between terminals is out for maintenance every morning from 7 to 11:30.
