I don't know why everyone thinks that Jazz is a LIFESTYLE gig. Sure it might be for the top 10-15% on the list. I was halfway up the FO list in YYC and still had to fly weekends, holidays, christmas, got shitty March, October vacation slots and worked 18 days consistently. due to the fact that I was hired in the middle of the hiring spree, everyone ahead of me were the same age or even younger. So am I going to see the top 10% of the list? only if most of those ahead of me change bases or change jobs, so most likely never. You are away from home from home 9-11 nights a month and thats considered LIFESTYLE??? I was actually getting ready to pull the plug and head back to 704 flying until I got a call from the Teal Team. Now I admit that its a hell of a step up from Jazz but now I'm dealing with Red eyes, time zone changes and long 5 day pairings, so its not the be all and end all of jobs. I realize that there is no such thing as a perfect job but I am trying to learn to suck it up and make some money to put food on the table for my family and at the end of the day thats what we're all here to do.

A few times in the past, but the money is here. please don't get me wrong as there are many aspects of my job that I do enjoy. I also realize that in any job there are always pros and cons. Now if I can just find a way to play hockey for a living

And I'll take packing my lunch over your shit company pilot boxes any day. Im sorry but to each their own. The day I find eating raw bacon appetizing, I will hate my job.

I'll tell you what, go and apply to El Al Airlines, and *Presto*, no more raw bacon --EVER!!

I heard the AC guys get hot meals (besides the EMB), so what are these boxes you talk of enlightened one?

Give me some pointers on how you pack a lunch for 5 days, I am having a sh*t show trying to do it. And then there is US customs raising a stink, risk of Salmonella, no fridges in most of the overnight hotels, etc......a hot (albeit not-so-healthy) meal once in a while would be kinda nice.. :|

AC gets hot meals, except the EMB folks. Hot meals are not always what they are cracked up to be... Bottom line, I think no matter what shows up on the menu there will always be complainers. At least if you pack your own, you have nothing to complain about! As for box lunches... well that is what we get at Jazz. And remember this... according to the Company, it is a "snack" not a "meal". I guess that means it does not have to be healthy for you!

Or read the nutritional value on the butter tarts in the crew meals. 1 contains most of your daily fat intake!

Maybe they figure they will save on pension if we all croak before we retire.

Sorry I don't do 5 day pairings. Done maybe 3 in my 4 years. I think the commuters love that kind of thing, not I. I eat like a bloody king. Don't think I need to go into details about how to pack. I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if I got meals from the company, they wouldn't be part of my healthy lifestyle and I would still be packing lunch. Also, most if not all our hotel rooms have fridges. Like I said, to each their own.

I find it funny that were getting knocked for saving money buy taking a lunch. Our perdiums are on PAR with Jazz, and on charters we get all the box lunches we can handle. I hate those damn butter tarts...

Jazz hasn't had a per diem uplift in over 6 years. If WJ is on par with early 2000 rates, well that is no bragging point. Crew "Snacks" @ Jazz are in addition to the woefully behind the times per diem rates. They are meant to put fuel in the tank when there is no time to buy it. If you can pack better good on you. The tarts are free. Give em to a homeless guy if they are beneath you. If we are talking about this shite to parse between the two you are all fucked up. Just my opinion.

PS: the WJ skippers I know (and that's a bunch) are really hoping their stock positions pay off because they have little confidence in being able to do the job that's required for too much longer. I hope it does pay off for them cause to a a man(and woman) they are good people.

little confidence How. in themselves, or the companies ability to continue to gow and turn a profit?
As for the perdiums, by no means bragging. There is enough to feed yourself well enough.

bc Flyer wrote "LARGEST aircraft at Jazz 75 seats...SMALLEST aircraft at Westjet 119 seats."

SMALLEST seat at Jazz = LARGEST seat at Westjet
LARGEST seat at Jazz = NOTHING to compare.

A 'meal period' based system will almost always compensate higher over most pairings than a 'trip hour' based system unless the hourly rate applied is significantly higher than the meal period daily total divided by 24 (i.e. Air Transat @ $3.48 per trip hour/domestic).

KAG I don't think your getting slammed intentionally, it is more of making a point to some of your coworkers (probably a groomer with a ppl) that improvements can be made. Even more so is that if you read the initial posting you would realize that your baggage handler
(737NG) has turned this topic into another Jazz bashing session and how great WJ is session.

Somebody should maybe think that maybe like yourself KAG, the initial poster doesn't have the experience to work/ couldn't get on at WJ right now and is looking at other options to get the experience. Would you still be flying rubber dogshit if Jazz wasn't there as a stepping stone???

I thought this thread was about butter tarts, stop changing the topic.

You've got to stop and try these if you're in the KW area.

 LOL, Okay, let me get this straight. You guys are now bashing the Jazz crew meals, and telling us how much better you have it because you get to pack your own lunch?......hmmmm  . I hate to break it to you, but there is nothing special, or exclusive about packing your own lunch. A lot of people (including myself sometimes) from a lot of Airlines (including JAZZ) pack their own lunch. If it works for ya, GREAT, by all means do it.

At least for those that can't be bothered with packing their own lunch, there is a FREE crew meal available to them as an option. If you don't like it, don't eat it, give it to the FA, or the MTCE guy, etc. Don't like the butter tarts, don't eat them, pack you own healthy snack and have that with your crew meal instead, give the tart to your kid or something.

I don't find the crew meals at Jazz bad at all. They are a lot better than what we had when I started with the company. The person who hooked us up with these new crew meals is a pilot here, who probably worked very hard to get them for us. I can't speak for the individual but I am sure he is open to suggestions should anyone have any.

BTW
Ok here's my question.... i know that first & second year doesn't pay what it should .... How is Jazz for a longterm career ? I'm pushing 38 in a few months and have two children and a wife ?

Serious replies only please !!!
I hope we have answered all your questions

Take care

Ralph Cramden said the same thing about his boxed lunch from home. Remember him? Probably not. You would have to be older and wiser. He would have made a good Giddyupper.

Funny how a butter tart hijacked this thread. I LOVED those, they were one of the best parts of my day there. Some people around here are such sucks you could throw them into a bucket of t*ts and they would still come out sucking their thumbs!

Man, the best pairings I had at JAZZ were the ones where the Captain offered me his Butter-tart.....in addition to the one in my crew meal. Those things may indeed be bad for you....but oh SO GOOD! :D

I went from a hot meal served almost every leg to packing my own lunch, and, now that I'm used to the self-packing of the lunches, I prefer it. I can eat what I choose, and hell, I've even managed to lose 15 lbs in the process! :)
