Ahhh, 'cause it's made in China? I defy you to find any consumer product made in China that doesn't break some small, irreparable plastic part within the first year, thus rendering the whole thing useless..Anyone know about that Twin otter lookalike. Is it the Y-12? Why is that not widely used around here?

gggq, thanks for the update.
NS, that's exactly the rationale I'd heard as well. We had a dozen folks from Vietnam through here, and that was generally their response when I asked about the Y12.

Re: New Twin Otter set to fly
Since the operating differences between them are slight, and the redundant spares are not widely different, there would be no operational advantage in ordering one with dash 27's or 28's. Dash 34's or 35's would be easier for spares availability. If your fleet had all -27s and you wanted the new 400 but with 27s would they sell you one?
Re: New Twin Otter set to fly
The 34 uses lots of the same stuff as the 27. Governors etc. Fuel nozzles are the same. The only difference I can think of offhand is the FCU. You can use lots of different FCUs on the 34. But the 27 won't like the 34 fcu. I found that out one night. There is differences.
The 27's new are a lot cheaper too. If you have no use for the high altitude, hot environment -34's and your fleet is 27's I think a -34 might not be worth it. But the -34 is a nice engine on Twin otter. Lots of Torque up to very high altitudes.

Update from NBAA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2vwMg8Q7uw
One of my co-workers just got back from Orlando and said folks were absolutely flocking around the machine. Also said it was one of the few aircraft there with any color (other than white) on it!

No need to guess as there are machines running around and overnighting in extreme cold with glass cockpits. Unless you drive something with absolutely no electronics/radios in it, no plane likes to wake up frozen c*ck stiff without pre-heat.Airtids wrote: Let's try and remember that gyros also take a beating in cold, rough and saline conditions. I think it will be a wait and see scenario as to how well the glass/chips will stand up.
Plug-in the engines, then the battery, then the avionics. If you don't have the resources to plug that much in, better run the herman on the avionics/cockpit for an hour before start.
Remember, there are more companies operating successfully in the north than just KBA...

Re: New Twin Otter set to fly
I don't know what all the fuss is.... I fly the twin otter with - 20s. Its a solid powerplant (clearing my throat) for that airframe. Its never let me down ( checking for lightning ) it never quits when you need it most.
What? Really!! I'm serious over here. And as for the avionics, its a twin otter! I've never had a instrument fail on me .... ever. Least if all the fuel guages or the troque meter. So what good will all those fancy/reliable instruments do us salt of the earth twotter pilots anyway? Its time we all stopped taking this flying so serious... its not like our lives are on the line. What could possibly go wrong?
Nice work Stack.
Bring on the 400!!!!!!

Didn't look at every posts but it doesn't seem that they had the idea to revove the landing lights away from the exhausts blast
