Stoning a woman to death is not 'in-house discipline'.

Sure it is, just the same as a mob hit on a snitch is.

And for the fourth (or fifth) time, I'm not saying its legal, or that it should be allowed (or that they should be 'exempt' from anything) ... their actions are criminal, and I'm sure the Spanish courts will hold these 9 'Sharia court' guys to account.

But that isn't going to stop that community from imposing what they believe to be Gods laws, just because some infidel Spaniards think that the laws of God don't apply in an area bounded by some random line on a map.

No, not at all. How many friggin times to I have to say I DO NOT support what these dudes have done with their 'sharia court'. Their actions are illegal, and the Spanish authorities should prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

This was a criminal act, pure and simple. But is nothing new, and is not the type of activity that is only found in the muslim community. It's not like the muslim population in Spain is suddenly building fancy sharia court houses and running amok stoning people in the streets with impunity. I hope the real courts send these clowns up the river; just the same as if they'd chopped the hands off of a thief.

What I'm pointing out to all these damn 'they are imposing their culture on others' types, and these 'if you don't like our laws, go back to where you came from' types; is that unless they kick up the same level of stink every time some other group commits a criminal act or acts, then they are being hypocritical ... it ain't just the odd bunch of muslims doing this type of crap.

Think of this in the terms of, oh lets go with a Hollywood type example ... say the movie "A Few Good Men". In that movie, there was a group of people (the Marines) who had their own traditions, codes of conduct, etc. A member of that group violated that code of conduct, and so some of the group went about disciplining them in-house (with a 'code red'). Such in-house disciplining of ones own members wasn't necessarily legal ... but was commonly overlooked and 9 times out of 10, was 'no harm, no foul' type of a thing.

Now, before anyone jumps down my throat about it, I'm not saying that movie is a true to life depiction of the US Marines ... but as an example goes, its a good movie/story.

There are many, many examples of such groups in real life. Groups whose members subscribe to certain rules applicable only to themselves, and know they may face some form of punishment if they break them ... not from civil or criminal courts, but from within their own community.

Just think of the mob, gangs, etc. Not saying its only criminals that have this, but those are well known examples. Native / aboriginal peoples the world over may have their own customs for dealing with their community without involving 'government authorities'.

You know Boosted, it seems to me that the guys who founded this country, they did believe in a universal set of laws, and tried to establish a country where they would be protected. I think you could argue that they failed, but cocky as it was, they thought it could and should be done. They called them inalienable rights. Things like freedom of religion, the right to assemble, freedom of speech, freeedom from search and siezure in your house etc etc. The founding fathers maybe were wrong but they definitely did believe in universal laws. A women who commits adultery with another willing partner does seem to me to have an obvious and universal right to not be stoned to death for doing so. Divorced sure. Punished? Maybe. Put to death...no. And were the founders hypocrites? Hell you only have to look as far as slavery to say hell yes they were hypocrites. I don't think that rules out trying to do better later. Stinson, I understand your belief. I too believe that there are certain principles which transcend humanity, such as killing is bad. I believe though, that killing, being bad, is bad for absolutely any reason.. and when I see a culture so willing to kill, that preaches that killing is bad, I have to pause and ask myself which other of my beliefs will be abused if I hand over the representation of my belief system to those who impose the universal law. That is my personal take on it, micro if you will.. macro however...

The problem with universal law is, the universal law that you wish to have imposed on the world is founded on a set of values which may or may not represent the values of those who you wish to impose such universal law upon. Do I think it is right that a woman is stoned to death because she cheated? Well, no not really, however I am not a part of a culture that believes such things. If I were a good muslim, I would probably find it perfectly acceptable. The whole idea of a universal law is predicated on western type morality. In a world of multi-culturalism I am hardpressed to enforce or criticize the beliefs of others, god know that for me to maintain my beliefs I share some blood on my hands. So being part of the problem I don't believe that any of us are in a position to comment on the solution.

Now, the implications of universal law are universal. This is a problem because it establishes a circumstance where those who believe in natural, or universal law (as it has many names) sit in judgment of those who do not. Which brings me to the next point that 'universal law' is a nurtured psychology. This means that it is not innate and we are taught, and we learn. Acceptability is not ingrained in our consciousness from birth it is manipulated and we come to our 'own' conclusions of belief based on what those around us do. Therefore, I choose not to be beholden to any system of nurtured 'universal' anything because that is what allows us to be pitted against one another over nothing more than an idea. In short, live and let live...
