I can vouch for 60N30W only being a d-bag when he is sober! Cut him some slack please!
Don't worry about it 60, just interweb BS.
If Air Transat does some hiring it always comes up, never fails. Now listen up boys and girls; you need to brush up on your English or they won't hire you! There are more hard core francophones complaining about new hires not speaking English well enough than they complain about the ones that don't speak French. Speaking some French is a bonus. I was born and raised in Quebec, can swear in both official languages with no accent and do all my briefing and checklists in English. Never heard a peep about it and if I did they would not have a leg to stand on.
Some may not like the hiring process, sim eval and all. All I can suggest is to embrace the process if you're serious about wanting to work here. It's really not that hard.
I felt I had to post an update based on my experience mostly due to downtomda earlier posts.
I am an English speaking Canadian my lineage is basically Irish and British mix. I had ZERO French at home but I learned some in school and made an effort to practice whenever I got a chance.
I had the lucky chance of getting a phone interview with Air Transat and they spoke to me in both officiallanguages. The other Interviews went very well but were mainly in Franglais as I tried my best. They were very polite and friendly and I was lucky enough to get a sim spot. I did my conversations in Franglais and my standard calls in English. I think I can get by in French and they very much seemed to appreciate that I made an effort. Well they have since seen fit to hire me for which I feel very lucky. However I also believe we make our own luck and my efforts to learn French were certainly appreciated during the hiring process.
It should be noted that a French speaking pilot I met had been sent home before the sim eval and told (politely) that he needed better English skills to work at Air Transat and please to work on his English and feel free to re-apply in the future. I would also like to point out that the President of Air Transat is Al Graham and I am quite sure he is an Anglo.
As for not getting hired based on your French well if you made it to the sim you had already passed the language test they dont spend $$$$ on sim time if you had not already passed the interview processes. Perhaps you made a mistake during the sim or got flustered (not an insult it happens to all of us at some point) so by all means apply again I know a few people who got hired there but only after multiple attempts.
As someone else posted as a society we are not doing a great job of being bilingual. I have met many Europeans who speak 5 or 6 languages, why because they embraced the opportunity to learn from their neighbors. We dont seem to have the same mentality.
As for Air Transat and the language issue, based on my experience I think they should be applauded for doing a great job accommodating Anglos while keeping in mind their roots. They also work real hard to make new employees feel welcome and part of the team.
As for working conditions well they are up their at the top of the game in both benefits, recent stability and salary.
In closing I am proud to be an Anglo working at Air Transat
I have an interview on march 21st but for the position of Flight Attendant. I was advised by the interviewer that they are now hiring english speaking applicants as well and its something they are trying out for the first time. Do you guys have any info on anyone else who is unilingual and has been accepted as a flight attendant with AT
May have been asked, but would anyone mind sharing what type of travel privileges are given at AT? Also, how does one apply if no posting is up. I heard people talk about faxing in an application. Is that how it's done?
Standby travel for your spouse, kids, and parents. About $80 per round trip. Also you have a few confirmed passes a year that can be given to anyone. They tend to cost quite a bit more though as you have to pay all the taxes that a regular ticket would have. Sometimes there are good deals on hotels and vacations.
No point applying if they aren't hiring. Watch the web site and apply when there is a posting.
A buddy of mine interviewed a couple weeks ago. They called him last week and said that they liked him, but they were cancelling the last hew hire class they had planned; so no open positions left.
I had a phone interview with air transat for a flight attendant position and i was put through to a 2 on 1 interview yesterday, after the first interview i was asked to go through to the second interview, im wondering if there was a 3rd or if i was supposed to go for fittings? or will they call me and let me know if i got it and then bring me back in for fittings and a health exam?
