If you believe that patriotism necessarily equates to "loving" any government, you are a fool. (Although that inability for many to distinguish between a nation and it's government is very revealing as to why it is so fashionable for so many left-leaning people to hold anti-American sentiments.)azimuthaviation wrote:I love how its the most nationalistic flag waving patriots who have the best advice on keeping their money out of the system they so profess to love. For a country with no draft, no national service and free education and healthcare all thats required is to pay a percentage of your income to fund it, a pretty small price i would say. I guess thats where your patriotism ends? April 30? A lot of bold talk on AvCanada about who loves this country the most, but when it comes time to put your money where your mouth is? So far I have RRSP's, TFSA's, real estate, and even giving up Canadian residency to work abroad.

The system needs to be simplified.
One wonders how much our government inefficiently has the money run around in circles. I don't have a beef about paying taxes, but for Pete's sake don't waste it. One would think after all how much money we could save in the general running of the government if we streamlined the process. Here's things I always wonder about.
1) GST cheques. Why does the government spend so much effort figuring out that it needs to give me a whole $37.40 back? What purpose does this serve. If you're going to take the money keep it, spend it wisely, don't send it back to me and tax it again. After all, who are we paying at Revenue Canada to figure this out and mail them out? Seems absurd.
2) Income tax - simplify it. Why if I'm having income tax deducted already do we need to figure out how much more I owe or have over paid? Surely we can simplify this. I'd be in favor of a flat tax if only for this purpose to simplify how much everyone pays. On that subject, why aren't federal employees income tax exempt? Doesn't it seem absurd that we deduct income tax from people's pay which is essentially coming out of tax dollars in the first place?
We can't stop here! This is BAT country!

GST is absurd period.
Why should you be forced to be a tax collector as soon as you have a business that makes more than $30K? Then you buy steel or what ever your raw material is, pay GST on that and have to figure out how much credit that provides you against your account yet still have to collect the GST from your customers.
Most customers want to pay cash and try to pull an underground economy on you to avoid paying the GST. If you go along with that you're now a criminal.

Gotto live outside to appreciate our country. The tax grab in Canada is equalled in other countries by bribes that must be paid left and right..
At the same salary, I would prefer to be in Canada, but I can't make home what I make here, by a margin...

Fine but I don't want it run like GST you'd have to sit down with an actual CRA employee for a week to hear stories about how mess up it is. At the end of it niether of you would completly understand but both of you would be fairly annoyed. You're welcome to move in for a while if you really are interested.Hedley wrote:I suspect this will shock you, Beef - is there a defibrolator available? - but I am not opposed to a consumption tax (such as GST) ... as long as there is no income tax.
One or the other, depending upon your economic religion. But both is absurd.
Personally, I would ditch income tax, and if you earned a buck, you got to actually keep it. I know, revolutionary. But if you choose to spend it, then the gov't gets it's piece.
That might actually encourage people to save money - another revolutionary idea - but that's a bedtime story for another time.

Yes youre a very accomplished person Im sure. 10400 posts on AvCanada, quite prolific. And I suppose you think those are all gold too. Here's a little tip for you, hold back a little bit. Dont be so eager to give up whatever you want to say.
Hey its Monday afternoon, why arent you being productive? Someone with all your supposed talents and intelligence should surely be able to find a more gainful way to spend the day?

Yeah, hed, you should be more productive, and sit in a bar, and have a beer, and provide employment to these poor brewery workers...

Bye the way, azimuth, no nuggets from you yet...you flushed them all???
Here it is midnight, and I have just lost three co-workers, and am having a rest and vodka. Do you approve???

Re: Taxation? Bend over....
Ok, BTD, the disconnect is here:
Our pilot has not converted his RRSP. He can live on other income. But see, he's still going to be in that high tax bracket at age 71 when he must convert the RRSP to a RIFF, so you're right when you saywhy did our commercial pilot above convert his RRSP to a RIFF prior to his retirement, so that he is drawing from it while receiving a salary?
I agree that being in a high tax bracket (from pension benefit &/or otherwise) is not everyone's idea of a problem, I'm just saying when you buy RRSPs, and when you cash them in, are both aspects to examine thoughfully. If he is in the top tax bracket he shouldn't need the RIFF yet. You are not forced to start drawing from it until you are 71.

Hey Expat, what do you mean by "... I have just lost three co-workers, and am having a rest and vodka. Do you approve???"
That sounds bad to me - if its true, have one on me.
Azimuth, take a pill. In fact take 2. If you don't think this country can be run any better than it is, your head is up your *ss; or perhaps you have zero imagination, in which case go away.
I had a very small raise this past year, for which I worked very hard and I got to keep $1500 extra. The governments got $1400 extra and NONE of those scumsuckers worked as hard as I did. The Quebec portion will go to the Mafia to fill potholes with sand and the Federal bit will go to pay for overtime for the losers at the gun registry. Think this is a good thing, Azimuth?
Did you read in the paper today how cancer treatment can bankrupt you because drugs are not part of medicare? You or any of your spawn ever going to get sick, Azimuth? Still think its a great system?
Hedley, where are the photos? Hedley?

Well I have just experienced Canada's medical system and really believe that the system is totally dysfunctional even if compared to so called third world countries.Did you read in the paper today how cancer treatment can bankrupt you because drugs are not part of medicare? You or any of your spawn ever going to get sick, Azimuth? Still think its a great system?
The waiting times for urgent tests are so long that the patient is terminal before they do the tests....and the cost of prescriptions is a real burden even if you have savings put aside for emergencies.
