Just reported on local radio that it was a forced landing on Great Slave Lake. Pilot and all passengers are ok.

From CBC website: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/air ... -1.2841903

Yellowknife RCMP and Behchoko RCMP are currently responding to a report of a downed aircraft near the Boundary Creek area northwest of Yellowknife, a news release says.

Emergency resources are being deployed and additional resources are being prepared to assist with the response for any required needs.

A military spokesman told the Canadian Press that a small passenger plane with seven people on board made a forced landing in bad weather.

The spokesperson said the Air Tindi Cessna 208 Caravan declared an emergency when its engine quit after leaving Yellowknife.

However, Nahendeh MLA Kevin Menicoche says he spoke with RCMP and learned it was a scheduled flight that left Fort Simpson this morning at 8 a.m.

According to the military, the plane managed to land but officials didn't know if anyone was injured.

The military said a Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft with search-and-rescue technicians on board was en route to the area from Winnipeg.

Other aircraft were trying to take off from Yellowknife to join the search, but were being hampered by bad weather.

Weather conditions are not good in the capital this morning. It's -19 C with freezing rain.

Buffalo Airways says it's holding some flights because of bad weather conditions.

Kudos to the pilot. Freezing rain is always bad news and especially hard on 'vans.

I did not hear any PIREPS of severe icing. Tower relayed "significant" ...moderate. Anyone know if this particular flight was on an IFR Flt Plan?

What time does this sched leave Simpson? I just had a look at the actual weather for yzf, and 13-14z doesn't look too bad. (The TAF isn't very nice, but we've all seen TAFs that are way off in left field). How does Tindi dispatch these flights?

I don't fly Caravans but would icing even have been a factor here?

Theoretically severe icing could cause an engine failure, I expect that the airplane would come out of the sky well before the engine stopped. If it was a genuine engine failure I'm curious as to the cause. It's been a few years since I was at Caravan sim, but I do remember going over every single instance of an engine failure in the Van, I think there were only one or two that were not preventable.

Opening the separator too late could do it, if ice had accumulated on the door and then is jarred loose and into the turbine. I imagine in severe icing the time between needing it open and being too late would be relatively short.

I've come to the conclusion I'd rather have the sep closed and the extra power when in ice, then open to save engine failure.... although at that point it's probably not going to end well either way.

Anyone else listen to the ATC tape? He declared a mayday stating he was having control issues. Never heard anything about an engine failure.

From what I could hear, he was on his way back into YZF, he had encountered severe icing at 8000 and was having trouble maintaining altitude. Nothing about engine issues that I heard.

Here is a source that logs historical data from the wire. the link should fetch the history in question.

http://www.ogimet.com/display_metars2.p ... &send=send

History there agrees with your post on a first glance.

Looks to me like the TAF was amended to include the freezing drizzle, after this happened. The CADOR has a time of 1420, and the taf is amended at 1442. Prior to the incident, tafs and metars all mention snow, I see no mention of 'freezing anything'.

If see even HINT of freezing precipitation, and I'm flying a Caravan......im not flying that Caravan, that day. It's that time of year. Learn to say, no. Learn the one hundred eighty degree turn. Be safe.

Barrie, North Bay, Pelee Island, Winnipeg...

If I was about to blast off in a Caravan after being given the PIREP the tower controller issued, I'd be reciting those places in my mind, and then to my manager if given any flak for waiting it out...

He sounded rather calm and got all aboard down and intact. The outcome could have been a lot less pleasant, hindsight is a bugger so I say well done!

Back when I lived in Fort Simpson, the Tindi sched came into YFS in the evening and overnighted there before returning to Yellowknife in the morning. Have the changed this, or was the flight already a half day late, possibly putting more percieved pressure on the pilot?
