Guess they better change their motto to "Almost anywhere, almost anytime...worldwide(ish)"

When I worked for Borek we had an upset customer who hadn't had a flight because of weather for a few days say:
"Anywhere but here, anytime but now"
"Anywhere but here, anytime but now"

Well, that is quite interesting. They've announced they won't be supporting any more expeditions, including dropping people off at starting points, picking up at the pole, nor will they conduct any resupply or rescue flights.
The article doesn't exactly say they won't ever fly to the pole, it just says they won't support expeditions.
I wonder if this has something to do with liability. Like whether lawyers somewhere have found a way to make the airline liable in some way if the expedition fails and people get hurt or die.
I remember a couple of years ago some Norwegians got frostbite and couldn't continue during an attempt to ski to the pole. I spoke to Just Curious about it a while later. He hadn't flown the rescue flight but knew all about it and it was quite a job to find a landing spot to rescue those guys.
I'm really wondering about whether they've decided to avoid legal hassles, or whether perhaps there's a climate-based reason. Maybe it's gotten less safe, for the planes as well as the expeditions.
I hope this doesn't result in adventurers trying to hire other ski-equipped carriers who may be much less experienced at these operations than the Borek guys are.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself

The Resolute "silly" season -- the logistics for running Pole trips is now getting very complicated and it becomes a question on how can you do it "legally" -- back in the day fill the tanks put barrels of fuel plus passengers in the back - in flight fuel transfer an off you go at 18500 in a 2 otter - it was said all you had to do to find the poll is look for the m/t barrels now fast forward to about 15 or 20 years ago -- fuel cashing on the ice -- mmmm -- now the trick was to find it on the moving ice -- after staging out of Lake Hazen -- and of course now it's only the crazies who want to get to the pole in a unique way -- walking backwards - finger in left ear and holding your dick -- and who can forget Pam -- how many times did she try and how many times was there a rescue mission -- I say keep them off the ice ---
Black Air has no Lift - Extra Fuel has no Weight

I guess the Russkies will do it from now on. Now that it doesn't happen anymore in Canada, I guess I would have to say that if there is a desire to only do it if it can be done legally and profitably, then I don't think the two co-exist. Weights were way over limit, altitudes flown were well over legal limit, certain refueling procedures were interesting to say the least(lets just say that no grounding strap was attached to the aircraft) and logbook entries were not completely accurate.
Overall, the kind of stuff the Russians are very comfortable with.

No more expeditions. but they will continue ops for "scientific" clients. Science is much safer...

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

so i guess you worked for KBA and therefore were party to and guilty of these alleged offenses?pelmet wrote:I guess the Russkies will do it from now on. 1. The company pays me to make money for it.
2. If the company doesn't make money neither do I
3. I still hate simulators

I'm afraid I'll have to take the fifth on that. Or is it only Americans who can do that.ettw wrote:so i guess you worked for KBA and therefore were party to and guilty of these alleged offenses?pelmet wrote:I guess the Russkies will do it from now on.
