Flight bag recommendations

Post by fxyz »

As my training progress, it's just impossible to hold all the suff in my purse any more. Any suggestions for small flight bags?

I'm not a big girl so ideally it's slightly larger than a headset bag and can hold my headset, charts, a handheld receiver and some small survival gears mentioned in another thread like a mirror and a lighter.

Thanks :D

I've been using a back pack for years. Literally. Take all the stuff you want to keep in it to MEC and try different packs. Easy to carry. You can put your purse in it as well. Cheers

Yes, a backback works best IMO. I originally bought one of those massive flight bags when I did my PPL. Now I just carry my headset, kneeboard, water bottle and glasses in a backpack. Much easier to carry and looks less dorky :)

I usually just grab a couple plastic shopping bags. You can fit lots of stuff in them and if your lunch leaks it's not a big deal, just wipes right up.

If you are looking for an actual flight bag I can offer you a BrightLine B6. It's essentially brand new and has never been used. I got it this year with the purchase of a Bose headset (so it unfortunately has a Bose label on it). I personally don't like the BrightLine series so I have no use for it. Like CpnCrunch said, it's quite a bit dorky. It doesn't come with aviator sunglasses and / or a leather jacket, however you can have it for free if you are in the GTA in Ontario. Otherwise PM me if you are interested and I might ship it to you.

I have a mixed feelings about the flight bags. Flight bags are overpriced. They come in handy and I use one when I am in the "student" mode and have to lug my notes, books, e6b, paper stuff. In my opinion, flight bags can be organized for an easy access much better than backpacks. For regular flying there is no use for them because everything is electronic.

The bag I use was given to me by one of the nice members from this board and I can pass it down if you want it. It is still in good shape. PM me if you want it (Toronto/GTA).

I sort of have two. One is just a rectangle with a zipper top. It holds VNCs an e6b and some books. Came with my ground school starter set back in the 20th century. It's where my nostalgic collectors (I used this one on a trip) charts live.

The second one is like a duffle bag with compartments that have their own zippers. I don't have the limitation of having to uphold an image so it's great.

Three headsets can have their own lightly padded spaces. If I ever buy a hand held there is a spot for it. I can separate charts from other stuff. There is a fun zip down desk. My knee board, ray bans, and old fashioned navigation junk goes in the main area. It's great. Even with my survival bag there's space for socks, underwear and t-shirts.

For my one day job, I just leave everything in the plane. For my other day job, it is handy to carry all of the "back up" stuff. For students I think they are practical. That being said, when flying aircraft that are not my everyday plane, I still find my self on ferry flights grabbing the flight bag and placing it on the seat behind me or beside me. I've tried backpacks, large organizers, and finally a actual flight bag.

I can't say enough about the Brightline Bags. It keeps everything organized and easy to access. My favourite feature is that I can unzip the bag and split it apart. I can keep the map filing cabinet up front, and the junk spare gear in the back. Mine is the older version, so when it wears out, I will be buying the modular or flex system. The best part about this bag is that it breaks down into compartments. This makes for easy storage in tight places, and declutters the cockpit to necessary items only.

fxyz, I would take MIQ up on his/her offer. Nice gesture!

I use this one, which matches your description quite well.

The stitching and quality is mediocre-to-poor (had to return the first one within a day) but the second has lasted a bit better. And it's only $60.

Thanks everyone! Thanks MIQ and FenderManDan for your generous offer!

A backpack is what I'm using now but it feels a little too big. It's a good size maybe after I get my license and start renting. Now in winter, it just can't fit in the 150 cockpit with my 230 pound instructor. :smt040

Sounds good I'll take a look.

More importantly, a back pack is way more useful if you have to hoof it anywhere around the airport, or to and from the airport.

If I am flying freight I use a backpack.
If I am flying sked, I use a swissgear briefcase roller bag. It fits a clipboard, headset, a couple of books. I found it at Bentley.
