hey with all the news about low oil price these days > gas is sure affordable to get to work but how much of a hit to the flying hours and upgrade times.Do you think about layoffs or freezes or cuts in pay
There doesn't seem to be any signs of things slowing down in Alberta. Companies are still buying planes and hiring. Oil companies are still plugging along full steam ahead.
I've already seen signs of slowing in the oil inustry. I'm aware that two of our clients (Alberta oil/gas producers) have cancelled projects and reduced their capital budgets for 2015 following the recent plunge in oil prices.
Speaking of low oil prices, it would be nice to see a similar drop in the price of avgas, but I'm not too hopeful on that front.

If your on the production side. You might see a slow down. If your in the construction, drilling, expansion side, it could be ugly. Commuting 3000km to work on the company jet. Those days will be over. Alberta is a drug addict that is used to extreme high and lows. They will survive, they will just complain about it and On-terrible and BC will say. I told you so. Alberta will blame Trudeau, again.

+1
But just remember that there is a ton more to the Canadian economy than just oil.... and lower operating costs plus people having more money to spend on other stuff like vacations is going to be a win win for most sectors of aviation.
Either way, reasonable people who've lived here know how the boom/bust cycle works and will be fine. There will always be idiots who mistakenly assume boom conditions will last forever and act accordingly and feel doomsday arrives when its bust. Contrary to what the average idiot who drives a giant 4x4 pulling a fifth wheel will tell you, most of the citizenry act in a more reasonable manner to contribute to a more robust economic enviornment than would appear. There will be more hay to make when the sun shines again. The world isn't going to stop needing oil anytime soon.
Look folks, this is a (potential) big issue for the Canadian economy. Commodities are all in a solid bear market, oil is just the latest. Not trying to be a downer but I'm in the financial business, and the stocks are all selling off. Spending cuts are coming, and this could go on a little while. Hope --- all employed in the patch will be ok.
The oil patch is like a 125 car coal train speeding down the track at 100km/hr..... when it runs out of gas it takes awhile to slow down.....next winter could be ugly if oil prices stay where they are......my thoughts

Hey the next year is an excellent time to pick up cheap used 4X4 trucks and fifth wheel trailers. Not nice to be calling my cash strapped suppliers idiots.
The low cycles are nothing but opportunities for those who plan for them.
One would hope that Alberta's economic orgy of the last 10 or 15 years paid for more than just sixty thousand dollar monster trucks and table dances.
Yes, but most of the rest they just spent foolishly.
Alberta will survive. Quebec will suffer as they live off equalization payments...that is unless our federal govt borrows more money to support their lifestyle.
Exploration will take a big hit. If you think the oil patch is like a train, you were not around in 82. It stopped dead literally overnight....thanks to the one whose son has risen like the phoenix to run our country.
