Westjet Fuel surcharge
Now i am curious in this article http://calgaryherald.com/business/local ... hs-to-come they claim their rates are not effected by Fuel cost's they are determined by passenger load. There for they will not drop their prices.
In this arctice http://www.canada.com/chilliwacktimes/s ... af7e6eb36a the rates increased for fuel surcharge.
I say you can't have it both ways. I know flights that Westjet started competing on with $75.00 one way seat sales. They claimed they were not under cutting the competition. These routes fly full almost all the time and try and get a seat under $175.00 now. I am not sure they can get their story straight.

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
WestJet just knocked 15% off their base fares a few months ago. The quote you are mentioning is just recently, after WJ already cut fares.
Yes WJ started with $75 fares...in 1996. If you correct for inflation, that's ~105 today. There are still fares around $100 around. Sadly, the governments and airports will charge you another $50 on top of that.

As a business owner perspective, I say.....start an airline.
Competition is a good thing...

Yes, its the darn government that is mandating they charge for each bag to reduce the unnecessary luggage we used to carry for a week's trip somewhere. It is the government that is trying to fight obesity by mandating that seat space be reduced to what is the human limit. And charge us for food headsets...pretty soon pillows and blankets.Sadly, the governments and airports will charge you another $50 on top of that.
It is good to know that WJ is facing the challange by reducing the number of CSRs at airports and allowing us the opportunity to stand inline for even longer..healthy living by wasting time standing in line.
The major Canadian airlines creative marketing departments have come up with so many add ons that you really can not blame them for losing track of one or two.

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
Yes those chocolate headsets are awesome but they do charge too much for them
Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
This sounds suspiciously like a criticism of WestJet. This behaviour is grossly misguided and will not be tolerated.

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
The fares i am referring to were not in 1996. They were in 2009 when they started flying to Yellowknife. They continued with these fares until both Northern based airlines chopped their flights back. The rates increased within a few months of this happening and have never gone back to $75.00. Both Northern carriers screamed fowl and Westjet claimed they were not cutting rates they were only charging what was fare.Bede wrote:WestJet just knocked 15% off their base fares a few months ago. Back on topic why did they claim a few years ago prices went up due to Fuel prices (Fuel Surcharge) now they claim the price of fuel going down has nothing to do with pricing.

Heard on the radio them made 91 mil last quarter. Not bad. So if fuel prices go way down, but they buy it in greenbacks do they come out ahead?

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
From the pic in the article, it looks like the cheaper fuel has made it possible to run the -200's again!

I’m still waiting for my white male privilege membership card. Must have gotten lost in the mail.

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
Isn't one of the most basic aspects of company (not just aviation) price management supply and demand? There is no need to reduce prices when planes are flying full.
Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
While they may be able to play the supply vs. demand game to their advantage at the moment, I think their PR department, or at least the spokesperson being quoted in the article are falling down on the job. Doesn’t Westjet try to promote themselves as a company that goes the extra mile to provide good value and service for their customers? This story paints them as a company whose focus is to take maximum advantage of the circumstance and by extension the customer, with no intention of sharing in the good fortune of the lower costs they’ve been unexpectedly handed. Certainly not the sort of "feel good" story that you usually see coming out of the Westjet media machine.

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
At the end of the day it is a business and I think it is in their best interest to bank the extra money now as there is this talk of a few new airlines popping up. War chests are always good when it comes to competition. And heck, people complain but doesn't seem to be slowing them down when it comes to swiping that visa for a ticket.
There are also a few other areas that need to be addressed before cutting income. Example: encore fa's living on a salary below the poverty line.

There is no Westjet fuel surcharge.
I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...

Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
Using MatrixITA it shows YQ charges for Westjet flights. Is that not a fuel surcharge?twinpratts wrote:There is no Westjet fuel surcharge.
The westjet site shows it as "Other Air Transportation Charge"
Re: Westjet Fuel surcharge
Found this website that seems to show that Hydro is correct;
http://www.extrapackofpeanuts.com/findi ... surcharge/
From the site "In airline speak, a fuel surcharge is represented by the code YQ."
