Capt. R.V.(Bob) Hemsley (Retired)

Post by BMLtech »

Bob Hemsley passed away on May 04 in his own home at the age of 84.
Bob had a lengthy and rewarding career in Canadian aviation, starting in 1950 with the RCAF, where he trained and then became an instructor on the Harvard Mk IV. He went on to multi engine flying in the Air Force, including such types as the Lancaster Mk X PR with 408 squadron, as well as the Canso, Expeditor, etc.
After leaving the RCAF, Bob went on to a lengthy airline career with the airlines, in the early years including CP air, Nordair, and Wardair, where he flew various types including the DC3, C46,DC6B, etc. This movement was due to the cycle of hiring and layoff that was prevalent at the time. He originally started with TCA as an oiler on the Super Connie, and in 1966 was finally recalled to a permanent position with Air Canada as a Captain on the Viscount in Winnipeg. He went on to become a Captain on the DC 9 in 1970, and then the B727 in 1979.In the early 1980's, he served as a First Officer on the B747, and completed his career with Air Canada on the B727 in 1986. Starting in 1987, Bob flew as a B727 Training Captain for Kelowna Flightcraft, during the time that this company was expanding, and inducting this capable freighter into their fleet for Purolator.
Bob finished his flying career in 1990, with over 22000 hours and an unblemished safety record, and enjoyed retired life after that.
He will be missed and remembered with pride by his loving family including his wife of 56 years, a daughter, and 2 sons.
Blue side up, Bob.
