A good place to get Float training and CPL in Canada?

Post by ChrisCool »

Hi,
I'm almost done my PPL this summer, and in the fall I plan on getting my floats and doing the Commercial Pilot License.
I had in mind to go to 'Air Heart Aviation' in Kelowna BC...
Was wondering what other good schools are out there where I could get both my floats and the CPL (less expensive preferably), I've spent a lot of money already
:(

Do you want to do your CPL on floats? Or do your CPL and get a float rating?

Whatever is cheaper.. probably option #2. do CPL and get a float rating.
the alternative is probably too expensive; no doubt.

Chris, the 'cheapest' place is probably going to be the closest one to your house, otherwise you'll have to factor in rent, travel, etc..
There's lots of threads on here about choosing good schools...but why don't you stick with the place that gae you your PPL?
Wait until you finish (or are just about to finish) your CPL before doing the float rating - I think that you'll find it easier..

I'm in Ottawa and doing my PPL for now at the Flying Club - we plan on moving out of Ottawa anyways, sell the house etc.. In Alberta for example prices are generally lower then here.
I think its a lot less expensive to do your CPL over there then here in Ontario. Less taxes?
Also getting your CPL at a local flying club or getting it at a famous school like Air Heart in Kelowna is not the same thing.. It will look better on your resume.. plus the scenery is awesome..
That's why I'm asking about a good school for CPL and floats either in Alberta or BC.

I'm willing to move even to the Yukon or NT to get this done - can't be worse then it is here. Ottawa is pretty boring and lifeless I have to say...and me I like to travel. 8)

The only time it mattered where I did my CPL (and Flight Instructor Rating) was that it was an "in" to get hired at that particular school as an instructor. After that, no one cared.

The only other advantage I could see is if you apply somewhere and the CP happens to have gone to the same school or has had previous good workers from that school, you may get called for an interview ahead of another similarly experienced guy, but not necessarily. Lots of stuff is right place, right time, internal recommends, and of course, if you check all the boxes for required licenses/ratings/hours.
