Chief Pilot Yes or No ???

Post by RWETHRYET »

Hello you guys

I have been looking for a new place fly lately and in the progress have been asked if I was interested in being a CP.

My very first response was a laugh and then was told they were serious. I declined and moved forward with our Captain discussion.

I have been thinking about it ever since...

I have two questions??

1. How much is involved to just get qualified?
I am sure there is at least one exam and then a TC interview.

2. How hard/demanding is it afterward, once doing the job?

With great power comes great responsibility, but unfortunately not usually an equivalent raise in pay.

When I did it, the exam was long and detailed but it was an open book exam. The questions were not a Yes or No, True or False type of general knowledge but the answer was chapter and verse of both the CARS and the Company Ops Manual. Most larger companies have support personell and the CP oversees all flight operations.
But unfortunatley, with smaller operations, the Operations Manager becomes more the sales manager and the chief pilot becomes more the operations manager/chief pilot/standby night shift pilot/person responsible for hiring/firing/shit disturbing but you also have the opertunity to make a difference IF the owner allows it to happen.
If it is a good company, the CP is a well respected person and the job is a good one but if the owner think he/she is king shit from turd island, the job can be shit.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Yes, what oldtimer said.

Also, make sure you get the authority that goes with that CP responsibility otherwise you will be a yes-man. Not a fun place to be.

Yes, that's a pretty good summary for what this original poster asked.

It's not an open book exam anymore. The interview with the TC guy is open book, with the book being the Ops Manual, if I recall. Last did it 6 years ago.
