Eurocopter Down

Post by xchox »

C-GIWD
The helicopter impacted trees near Brampton Airport, ON.
Pilot stated crash was due to engine flameout (TSB has issued warnings about potential flameouts in Eurocopters in cold weather - due to water forming between filter and engine - and freezing).
The two occupants onboard the aircraft were not injured.

Sounds like a hell of a job to get out without injury in a chopper, although I'm just a fixed wing guy

Yeah, the EC120 does have a "water problem" in damp climates. I pulled defog while flying one in BC, and instead got full fog. After 15 minutes of flying around with extremely little outside view, and trying to defog, I was able to land - really only because of excellent contrast between a freshly paved black runway and the super green grass beside. Normal fixed wing type approach, and hover taxi off the end. When I shut down, it still looked like this:

I understand that there was a crash in Quebec some time ago, with the same factors, but nowhere near as welcoming a landing surface view.
