Do you assure that your plate/reg. is not altered on your walk-around with your car or plane

Alteration of an aviation document

Post by crazyaviator »

I was recently asked to report to a judge in BC concerning a charge of "altering a licence plate" Someone ( not myself or wife) altered my rear licence plate with blue tape to make the "F" look like an "E"
I wish to conduct a poll to determine how many folks, prior to flight or driving, do or don't look at their plates/registration to assure legality. The cop mentioned it was my fault I did not look closely at the plates to determine any alteration.

Yes, it's an important part of my preflight/drive ritual.

Once stuck a home made bumper sticker on the rear of a buddies van which read "Cops Are Stupid". He drove around for nearly a week, untouched I might add.

Making a false entry in a pilot logbook,Journey log, etc. altering any Aviation document is an offence under the CAR's, and so is altering the aircraft letters on an aircraft, TC enforcement has the right to verify any Aviation document at any time.

While true for altering a aircraft reg, I have often seen in movies where it's clear they have put for example a N over the C on cdn aircraft (think that was in resident evil? Also done in other movies) None the less I wonder if there's a special exemption for that for the purpose of a movie? I don't even know why they change it at all.

There must be a way to legally change or temporarily obliterate an aircraft registration for a movie. Years ago, a film company were shooting in Southern Alberta with a Bell 205 helicopter they painted in Viet Nam camo with water based paint and they just covered over the civil registration on the camera side.

Also saw a van with a bumper sticker that said "Call 911 and make a cop come".

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

While the cop is correct, and technically you're in violation of the laws as written, your attitude when you see the judge will go a long way towards just walking away unscathed. Plead ignorance only, and you will leave with a fine. Argue that nobody looks at their plate before they drive, report that you corrected the problem as soon as it was brought to your attention, and bring a photo showing the plate corrected... Maybe you'll get away.

Agreed and will do that, as a note, 2/3 or twice as many folks in the poll would be charged with an offence even though they did not commit it

More concerning to me would be who the heck is dicking with your licence plate and why?

Ultimately you're responsible for the plates on the car you drive but as mentioned before, a reasonable appeal in a respectful tone would go a long way.

Driving around with a dirty licence plate will also get you a ticket, So in the winter check your licence plate for snow or ice on it.,
