11.5 hours with one stop? Challenge accepted. I regularly hold it over 6 hours non-stop.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

In the last photo in the article, they point out the squadron logo applied to the side of the aircraft. Rather interesting design. Anyone know the history behind it?

I am not an Air Force guy so I can't comment on what they do in a fighter jet, but. . .
Many smaller aircraft without toilets but big fuel tanks have relief tubes.
Gliders, which often do fly for extended periods of time (my personal record was 7 hours, 5 minutes aloft) don't have relief tubes, so (male) pilots often put on something that is like a modified condom with a tube leading into a bag. Gives a preview of what to look forward to in retirement home.
As for the bigger business, I don't really know. 'Depends' and a trip to the laundromat after landing is what I imagine is the only realistic option. Staying away from the greasy-spoon diner, Thai food, or prunes before flight, or taking some Immodiums before flight would also be helpful, I imagine.

Lots of airplanes had "pilot relief" tubes under the cockpit seats. Beech 100,200, Pa31T. Also, many aviation supply stores sold "range extenders" which was a 1 liter plastic bottle with a tube or Jill cup and a spill proof lid.
I once had an inquisitive pilot ask me what it was and I told him it was a salty microphone. Talk into it. He tried.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

My bird has at best 2:30 hours of fuel, maybe 4 if we install extended range tanks. Plus we can't to aerial refueling.

We called it the Polish microphone on the of the gliders I used to tow that was built in that country. But, it was a surprisingly large item. Perhaps designed for the export market.oldtimer wrote:I once had an inquisitive pilot ask me what it was and I told him it was a salty microphone. Talk into it. He tried.

It's a little easier when flying floats. Just try not to land on a lake that has an active camp but hey, when you gotta go you gotta go.

Yea, that's going to catch up with you. I used to be the same, have fun with that.iflyforpie wrote:11.5 hours with one stop? Challenge accepted. I regularly hold it over 6 hours non-stop.

Re: Brings to mind the obvious bathroom question.....
My longest mission is 10.1 in a Hornet. I did not have to go (I just forget about eating, drinking or pissing when I am focused).
But, if we have to go, we have piddle packs. Essentially a small plastic bag with a dry sponse at the bottom. You piss through a neck opening. That's the short version.
Long version, you safe your ejection seat, unstrap part of your harness and loosen up your G-Suit, unzip the bottom of your flight suit, try to get the gopher to show its head, grab it by the neck and do your best to aim (not an easy feat with a life preserver, helmet and mask). Reverse everything to come back to the original state.
Now, put an immersion suit on top if it all... Life has better been good with you in term of size... Not to mention you have a set of zipper feelin like shark teeth you need to put your tool through...

^ Have heard stories of that bag leaking and someone finding out during maneuvering...
Also of a certain pilot being made to wear diapers because they Covered (themselves) In Piss.

AuxBat, why not just use the condom-and-tube arrangement that was mentioned earlier? NASA used them on the Shuttles...AuxBatOn wrote:My longest mission is 10.1 in a Hornet. I did not have to go (I just forget about eating, drinking or pissing when I am focused).

They are not available to us right now and it hasn't been tested in our airplanes. It is not trivial in an ejection seat aircraft (interference during an ejection comes to mind).

Re: Brings to mind the obvious bathroom question.....
Thanks for the helpful advice. I was blessed with a long version as well. Perhaps Rockie can tell what was the procedure for the short version.AuxBatOn wrote: Long version, you safe your ejection seat, unstrap part of your harness and loosen up your G-Suit, unzip the bottom of your flight suit, try to get the gopher to show its head, grab it by the neck and do your best to aim (not an easy feat with a life preserver, helmet and mask). By the way, how many g's or what maneuvers can you pull while doing this. After all, Bob Hoover poured coffee into a cup while doing a roll.

Re: Brings to mind the obvious bathroom question.....
Someone once asked me what I considered the essential skill required to be a "bush" pilot in Canada. I told him "being able to fish two inches of pecker out from under four inches of clothing and take a piss without getting anything wet". Unfortunately it was during a CBC interview.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself
