Looking for some general advice on job opportunities in Atlantic Canada after receiving licenses and ratings. I've been mulling the idea of getting my commercial license for sometime but I'm just not familiar enough with the career prospects. I'm currently in NL but will likely be relocating to NS as my wife is expecting to receive a teaching position. I notice a fair number of flight positions posted but not sure how that shakes out regionally. I tend to notice plenty of new pilots heading north.

What kind of opportunities exist in Atlantic Canada? I've read a fair bit about people moving for jobs (long distance moving) and while I certainly wouldn't close the door to a job opportunity, I'd prefer to stick in the Atlantic region. Do entry level positions exist in the region or will I realistically have to look northward or westward?

NS is pretty dire for entry level flying and maintenance positions.

Agreed. There just isn't much work there.

If you'll be in the YHZ area, EVAS would be the best combo deal of getting hired at a reasonably low flight time and offering good experience with their B1900 flying. Since you are low-time, you may scout their website to see if they have any non-flying admin / ops jobs. Once you are in the company, you will soon get to know the key people and may be able to do a move to the flight deck.

Porter has a YHZ base, but it takes a bit of seniority to hold it, especially on the Captain side.

I believe Jazz closed their YHZ base years ago.

Think Provincial has the King Air medevac contract at YHZ and some surveillance work. Those jobs pay alright.

There are some flight instructor jobs in NS, but not many and you won't build hours too fast.

CargoJet has some crews based in YHZ.

Maritime Air Charter....not sure what to say about them.

What other flying jobs exist in NS for civilian background folks. Is there anything out of Sydney?

There are a few corporate jobs in NS, but they all take years of networking and knowing the right people.

Your best bet is probably rotational work, something like 2 / 3 weeks on and then 2 / 3 weeks off, if you can find the right situation. Look at some of the northern operators or geosurvey companies.
