I'm going to take the medical exam category 3 for the first time to start PPL training.
I called some a doctor's office, and the receptionist told me that extra charge will apply for ECG, hearing, and colour blind.
She also said "basic colour blind" is included.

I know that ECG is extra (and ECG is not required as I'm under 40).
But I am not sure if hearing and "non-basic" colour blind tests are required.

Are they optional?
As far as I understood from Transport Canada website, both of these are mandatory.
Are there different types of tests for hearing and colour blind which I can choose???

AFAIK, ECG and Hearing are only required for CAT 1. You shouldn't have to worry about that.

No ECG unless there is a reason to be concerned. The Cat 3 "hearing test" is the doctor talking quietly and making sure you can hear them. Colour blindness means looking at numbers on Ishihara plates.

At least for the Cat 1 hearing test with an audiologist (not sure the difference for Cat 3), most hearing aid places will do it for free. The audiologist told me they make their money from hearing aids not the tests. Call around.

Some doctors will do the ECG included with the medical price, not that you need one in this case.
